Default Project 308/Holyshift's build thread

Alright so Iam gonna start a build thread,Iam already half way through with it,but Ive been taking pictures through the whole process.Iam gonna try to update as often as possible but it all depends on my work schedule.Being an auto worker the overtime fluctuates. So heres some pics from the start.
This is what I started with, stock bottom end 5.0,GT40 SVO aluminum heads,1.7 rockers, crane cam, yadda yadaa....But the reason for tearing this thing apart was I got a killer deal on a rotating assembly from a guy in FL.Long Rod 308,Scat forged crank,Oliver Forged rods,JE forged pistons,SFI balancer, and a steel flexplate which I dont need and if anyone wants to buy it let me know.28oz.Anyways got all that for $900.

This is the tear down of the motor

The motor out of the engine bay...ewwwwwww....what a mess.

Motor out, ready for machine shop, looks like hell

I found this when I was tearing the motor apart...pretty interesting huh??

Some more pics to follow

Alright heres some more pics. I have a friend that I went to school with that has a little powdercoating business so I took the advantage and he hooked me up with some decent prices.I had my intake, thermostat, timing pointer, timing chain cover, and I bought the Summit Racing long tubes and he is ceramic coating them for me...which actually he just called and said theyll be done tomorrow afternoon...sweet.
Intake before powdercoat

I did a little gasket porting by myself..dont make fun of my work now, just couldnt believe all the extra metal around the gasket.

After the halfa$$ port job

After powdercoat

Passenger side of the engine bay complete, and no I didnt smooth anything, too lazy and this car is a STRIP/street car as I call it so...the holes can stay...less weight...hehe.

Engine bay to my satisfaction...good enuff!!!

Motor pics next!!!!

Alright,I have another friend thats a machinist sooooo I had him mill the choke tower off the carb for me...nothing major but...Iam documenting everything so heres the pic.

And today I got the pump, pickup, motor plate, flexplate and new oilpan on along with the solid motor mounts...also this is a cell phone pic so bare with it.

Thats where Iam at right now, tomorrow night were gonna drop the motor back in the car and degree the cam.The machine shop has my heads right now, they are knocking .020 off them to bump the compression up to about 9.7:1. Should have them back tomorrow or the next day.No rush though cause its not like I can drive this thing here in north west OH,the snow is rediculous!!

looking good!

shouldn't you run a 7qt oil pan with a high volume oil pump?

+1, a HV pump will drain a stock pan VERY easily.

No it won't. Sucking the pan dry is a result of poor oil return to the pan or excessive clearances throwing oil out of the rods at high rpm. If it's standard pressure, regardless of high volume, once the volume flow gets high enough to reach the pressure the bypass will open.

That said, it's always a good idea to have a solid oiling system, so a windage tray and larger pan are only a plus. The larger pan actually provides benefits in that the oil runs cooler over all(and thus the engine) and you can go longer between oil change intervals. And a baffled pan is nice since it reduces the chance of running the pickup dry from heavy cornering or accel/decel.
