AOD power limit

I did not have an AOD, but I did have an AODE. It is practically the same save for a stronger OD band and small details here and there. The 4r70w is the transmission that received all the goodies. As for it's durability the AODE was good for my N/A motor. It worked fine with 271rwhp/311rwtrq. I had several drag passes a year and it shifted nicely. My best quarter I got with it was 13.17@105. However, it did have a shift kit, cooler and 2700 stall converter. However, once I threw in boost, the transmission lasted three months of moderate driving. It started slipping in OD. So I threw in a used AODE w/4r70w internals and it has lasted for the last couple of years with 400rwhp/431rwtrq.

my virtually stock aod held 461rwhp with no problems. it was all street use tho, i only went to the track once with that setup and i ran high 12s roasting the tires half way down the track. only mods were tranny cooler, 3500rpm converter and 2" od band.
my aod is holding 600rwhp right now just fine but its far from stock.
really a stock aod can hold 1000rwhp with no traction. to blow a tranny it takes only 2 things but both must be present, and thats traction and power.
with a converter, cooler and good shift kit you should be able to run 12s for a long time with no issues at all

thanks lucky i was hoping to hear from you because i could have sworn you still had your AOD. this car i doubt will see the track and be a street car so it should hold for a very long time then with as little power as it would make

My AOD held up to the stock motor for a week and blew out the OD bands. I was cheap and just out of highschool so I put another stock AOD in it and it lasted about 3 months. Finally a buddy that does mud drags gave me a built C6 with manual valve body for $75 that is now the trans in. Just had to have a custom drive shaft and also the input shaft switched out on the tranny. Overkill but it was cheap.

I guess for me personally, the only I NEVER do is mash the pedal when the car is in OD(unless I get cut off or something). The OD bands in the AOD's are extremely weak. They are what they are: a band and not a gear. The only time I accelerate is from a dead stop or a gradual roll on. I also allow the trans to shift for itself. With my old AODE, I used to shift manually all the time which caused a strain as well. But these are just my recommendations/experience.

yep around 400 is pushing it with the aod, the aode will handle a bit more than that but the gear ratios suk, the 4r70w ratios are a good step up from the aode, although there the same exept for smaller things like the ratios and better clutches and bands, the planetaries will interchange in the aode and the 4r70w but the aod i believe is a different size all together as the input shaft dia. the vlv bodies and solenoids!
there are decently priced upgrade kits for the aode, lentech has good stuff and performance automatics.
i had a 308 with a tfs hand picked topend (not the kits) and 150 shot of gas mine asted 2yr and its in my car now (aode) pa vlv body and 3500rpm converter!
its backing a 347 now so i`ll let you know how that works.
