Check Engine Light
I wanted to share an experience that was really getting to me.
I have a 1995 Mustang Cobra Convertible and for the past 2 weeks all of a sudden the Check Engine Light would flicker on then off then back on as I drove it. It had no real signs that anything was wrong so I figured ...no big deal. I took it to the shop numerous times and they plugged it up to the computer diagnostic machine to see if it was sending any codes.
After checking multiple times and many different machines, my mechanic kept saying "it is not throwing me any codes". So I finally gave up on it and figured I would have to live with it. Apparently, I am told that the 95's were a year before the upgraded onboard cpu systems that the 96 and above have...still not sure if that is accurate or not.
Anyway, I jump in the car 2 days ago to run to the convenience store (Wawa for you East Coasters) and it drove fine. I go in and when I came back out the car would not start. I turned the key and nothing, no door chimes, no click of the starter, nada.
So I called a shop close to me who I have used before and they were cool enough to send a "Rescue Van" so to speak with a Tech and a Battery after trying to jump it. We put the brand new Interstate Battery in and same thing...NADA! I'm pissed at this point...not at the guy but the car.
So the tech tells me he thinks it might be the Starter. We were able to pop start it in 2nd gear rolling down the back alley of Wawa and finally got it started. I drop it off at the shop for them to run some tests and they find out that it is a bad "Negative Cable" that connects the battery to the rest of the car. Walla...problem solved!
Now the check engine light doesn't come on and the car runs perfect. I share this story because I would hate to see someone else go through what I just did. Hopefully if you are having the same issue you come across this post and it helps. I decided to change both the Positive and Negative cables at the same time...I figured it would not cost that much more and wanted to make sure the car was properly taken care of.
