Power steering whine
I put a new power steering rack and pump on my 91 about a month or two ago. I primed the pump and bled the system with the tires off the ground. I did this for probably 30 mins.
No matter what I do I can't get rid of the steering whine from the pump. I'm sure the pump is good because the first one I got from Napa was not good and it whined LOUD, whether the car was on or off the ground.
This new pump I put on does not whine IF the tires are off the ground, but it does if the tires are on the ground. I spoke to a local shop and the mechanic said some Fords are a little stubborn with getting all the air out and said I should drive the car and it might work it self out.
It's been about a month and it still whines. The steering is fine, it's just noisy.
Anything I can do about this?
I heard there was an air evac tool but I haven't found one. I might be searching it wrong on google. Maybe theres a certain name for it?

Ford ps pumps are notorious for being noisy. The newer style ones are definitely quieter, but not near as much as comparable cars. It seems like you did everthing you could to get the air out, but have to considered the type of ps fluid you used? Maybe try a sythetic with the same rating.

I might try the synthetic. Like I said when the wheels are off the ground it is really quiet, no noise at all from the pump. It's only when I set it down and turn the wheels that I hear the whine.
I had a 92 LX 2.3l years ago and it was the same way. Surely they have quiet pumps for these cars?
If I can't stop the noise I'll just get a manual rack and look into bypassing the P/S pump.

^^^I went through three reman pumps in less than a month, 1st one quiet but leaked, second, whined like no other, third whined loud and at idle steering got stiff, rack was new = was not prob, , what I finally did was rip the third off, went over to the corner in my shop and pulled off a oem pump I had on a 2.3 92 mustang motor , changed the fitting and put it on my 89 and prob solved, quiet and no leaks.........best thing to do is try a new oem pump, the reman autoparts stores use to come with a orange sticker that said "do not return for noise, will be nosiey for first 500 mile break in"....lol I know some that never quieted down = remanufactorer sets them up to tight!!
What I did is sucked it out of the top of the pump it smelled burned" and kept adding new fluid started the car up turning the steering wheel left and right pumped the old stuff out again and added went through this routine a couple of times until all the fluid was clear/clean and than added lucas treatment......that's how I did it seemed to help no leaks?
