500 hp out of a 331
Ive been researching on how to get around 500 hp out a 331 with a roller set up. i have seen a few ideas but would like someones actual testimony on their 331 so i can have a more definite direction to go in next. i will be using a lvl 10 dss racing block and their gurdle.
What Ive got so far- i came across a great deal on some edel. rpm heads which i have had a friend port and a 331 stroker kit (eagle rods and crank) and je flat top pistons for 800 bucks (couldnt pass up)
Ive also got a holly 750 carb double pumper and will buy a fuel pump soon
What Ive researched- its looking like i will need around a .600 lift cam(intake and exhaust), Ive been looking at the comp cam magnums 1.6 roller rocker arms because for the price and good feedback, it seems more then worth it(hopefully getting the springs, retainers and timing chain and gear with a cam package, also custom sized push rods,an edel. victor jr intake man, 1 and 7/8 in bbk long tube headers, higher compression pistons, and obviously a nice oil pan
what do you guys think? any help would be appreciated.

Sounds similar to my setup, mine is a 347 I have a DSS block, billet crank, H Rods, 11:1 DSS extreme pistons, AFR 205 outlaw heads, Cam inovations custom ground solid roller cam with a .600 lift, currently fuel injected with a trick flow R CNC machined intake it made 398 RWHP through a C4 transmission. Figure a 20% drivetrain loss I am making around 475 at the crank.
Are you looking for a drag car or street car? Mine is not much fun on the street with the cam it has in it.

You dont need a cam that big just do a power adder and you will be close, you want crank 500hp or whp? Those heads you need a turbo to make it to 500 most likely or a 200 shot!
Cams like that you can just about count out a DD or frequently street driving!

IMHO, you need more cylinder head than you've got, even ported.
You'll need more cam lift than what you're posting about also, somewhere around .650.
I'm using an earlyn 302 block (69) with tea poerted trick flow twisted wedge heads, a solid roller cam around 246 @.050 with .640 intake and .630 exhaust.
11-1 compression, 1 3/4 long tube headers, Vic Jr intake and a worked 650 double pump carb.
Engine is 4.060 bore with 3.400 stroke.
Thru a c-4 with 4500 converteo and 4.30 rear axle I go 10.87 @ 127 with 2860#
It's making right at 400 RWHP.
I think a 331 could do what you want it to do but it would get to be VERY expensive.....

ya its a strip only car, and i dont want to run any power adders. As far as what youve said tinman, thats actually what im looking for, a high 10 low 11 sec car. the suspension is all ready (tubed front k member and rear end kit from team z, driveshaft loop, sub frame connectors, full adjustable shocks and struts, c4 with shatterproof bellhousing, hardened output and inputshaft, reverse man valve body, transbrake, 4000 stall, and of course slicks and skinnys) once i put a roll cage in im figureing it will weigh 2700 to 2800 pound with me in the car (weighed last time without front k member and it was 2775 with me in it and i weight 150)

Killercanary(on other forums) built a 331 with AFR 185 competition heads, and using a cam ground by Ed Curtis(for his 302, not the 331) it made `415rwhp and ran 11.5 at 121mph n/a in a 95 vert street car. With 9:1 compression no less. I'm sure low 11's would have been doable with a cam setup for that engine, rather than using the 302 cam, plus some more compression. Maybe high 10's.
You don't need a huge cam and heads to go fast, just the RIGHT cam and heads. And setting the car up correctly.

Why laugh at alcohol it makes twice the power regular gasoline, the BTU count is way higher, the power output is amazing, its cheaper than pump gas, way cheaper than race fuel, hense getting you to your goal faster!
You did ask how to obtain a certain power output and et right?
