Default 3g time: No choice now

Well my stock 2g has finally had it. I recently started the car and heard a loud clicking sound. I immediately popped the hood afraid it was my engine I was hearing, but it turns out the sound is coming from my alternator. It seemed to be getting louder by the minute and sounded like a rock clanging around inside a tin can.

I am going to replace this before it catches fire on me. I don't want to spend money on a stock alernator so I am heading to the pick n pull tomorrow and will likely get one off a Taurus since there so much cheaper. I was going to get a brand new one with a lifetime warranty but they want the old one as a core and they said it has to be another 3G. I am not about to pay 155 when I can get one for far less than that.

Is there anything else I should grab with the alternator, besides the obvious plugs?

I have read something about a large fuse for the alternator. Does the Taurus usually have a fuse on the car I can grab or are they not fused?

I read the alternator will likely have to be reclocked but from what I've seen it doesn't look all that difficult and the wiring part I will have to go over it again.

watch out for the cheap custom alts. I got one a couple years ago and 6 months later it crapped out. I took it to get rebuilt and the guy said that the windings were the correct gauge for the HO but the voltage regulator was mickey mouse.

not sure on the Taurus alt, but I just did the 3g on my coupe. Pulled the alt out of a 94 T-bird....here's my right-up:
http://forums.corral.net/forums/5-0-...rade-done.html
I fused mine with a 140 amp circuit breaker, that way if it did ground out, I wasn't eating 12$ fuses.
and besides having to grind a notch on the bracket, it's a bolt up and go.

yes they want the same product back as a core, but do they check? No, do you think they would take the time to pull out another part with the same part number and compare? They don't, and have I done this before? Sure have, did it when I bought my SVO master cylinder and will also when I order my SVO calipers
