The block is the same as the others all the way back to 85 or so. Pistons change over the years but, the block is the same.

I forgot to mention that mine did too. Mine didn't have a dish in the pistons like the my 93 pistons did. You top that off with a gt40p head that is at 59cc's and you have more than a 9:1 motor like advertised. I figure it is a bit more than 9:5:1. That is probably why it ran so damn good.

Put the belt back on, hold the pulley and try it.

wait, being a 97 block, it may have the kind that needs to be beat off with a hammer and wrench. If you have an air chisle, it does it pretty easily. Still would help to have the belt on either way. I can't remember if they are reverse thread or not. If it is, it usually says it on the fan shroud which you probably don't have lol. I don't think they are though.

Omg man ya this damn thing, there is 4 bolts in the pully 4 in the fan conecting it to the clutch.... ive tried just about everything, there is a hex on the fan clutch shaft i can hold that stationary no problem ive wacked the clutch both right and left trying to get this thing to come off but nothing... does the fan clutch and shaft untread from the pully or does the clutch come off the shaft??? The book shows nothing and the parts are all broken down on the diagram... if the shaft untreads from the pully then its a matter of wacking the shaft wile holding the pully stationary witch i may or may not have tried lol i cant remember! Ive spent maybe 3 hours messing with this thing and i said F it and started drinking beer!

If it is the one I am thinking about, the water pump has threads on the shaft and the clutch has a big hex that threads onto it. You shouldn't be able to remove the plastic fan blades without having the clutch off of the water pump. If you have tried wacking it with a hammer and no go, you will probably need a chisle to get it off. An air chisle can hit a lot harder than a big wrench and a small sledgehammer.

As far as holding it, that is what the belt helps you do. The more pressure you are able to get on the belt, the more the backside of the belt will let the water pump turn.

My engine is a freshened up 96 and it runs great. I often run it up to 6K rpm with no problems. It has some work done to the GT40 heads that came on it and a TF Stage 1 cam.
The only bad thing about these engines is that the pistons are not forged like the 87-92 engines were, but unless you run N.O.S. or a lot of boost, it will be fine.

Yes i will giving this fan clutch another try this week and then my whole motor will be getting stripped down, it will be getting forged internals and a lightened crank havent decided on a cam yet but i want to use my HOLSET H1E turbo and would love to see 30+ psi or 50 if the block will alow it... i have a company here that makes stainless steal gaskets for anything so i can boost proof the whole motor and i think with a 76mm throtal body and 4 1/2" down pipe things could be interesting but will see what happens i need a tranny and to fit the motor figure out ignition blah blah... you guys know this stuff power from lexus to ford coils lol gonna be fun
