After studying the schematic, it appears that a common component for some alternator wiring and the sense circuit for the charge indicator light is the ignition switch. I've replaced it. The indicator light now comes on when the switch is in the run position and It hasn't failed yet since replacing it. We'll see what happens.

Well good.Maybe that took care of the charging issue.

It didn't correct it. It does appear though, it loses 12v on the charging indicator sense line. The alternator is just shutting off. The fuse, bulb and resistor are good.

Have you touched the alternator body once the alternator begins to fail?? The member mentioned above said his alternator would get so hot,you would burn yourself if you touched it for more than a second or two??

my new alternator would get super hot. It would make a bad smell and start making the lights flicker at night.

I re-wired my fan to the low side, instead of the high side. It fixed it for 10k miles or so now.

but yeah, the voltage regulator went out in the old one. It would work one day, then the voltage gauge would drop the next, until it finally quit.

It hasn't failed again yet to check it's temp. Had another look at inside fuse 18. It supplies more than just the indicator lamp. It also, among other things, supplies the CCRM. If that fuse blows, the engine won't run.

Default Alternator short out

Hey there guys,
problem I'm having is alternator went bad, changed it for a new one, lasted for a day. Thought that the alternator was defective so changed it out for another one. Once again did not hold charge. At this point I'm thinking there's an electrical problem, I did buy the car with an msd on it, not sure if that is pulling more voltage and need a high performance alternator.
give me your thoughts about this
Thank you
