The Mustang is simply able to retard and advance that cams. Thats not really the same thing as the VTEC with seperate cam profiles. Their are some that believe the original Honda VTEC system intentionally switched cams late to provide the obvious kick. If they had switched cams at the time the two powerbands crossed their would have been no kick.

The 2005-2010 4.6L was SOHC so had to retard/adavance the intake and exhaust together. The 2011 5.0 is DOHC so can retard/advance the intake and exhaust seperately. Advancing the intake closing point (most important valve event) allows the cylinder to start making pressure earlier (Higher Effective Compression) increasing torque at lower rpm while retarding the intake closing point gives more time to fill the cylinder increasing power at high rpm. The exhaust opening point on the other hand (the second most important valve event) often wants to move in the opposite direction for maximum power. You can also use the movable cams to reduce pumping losses at cruise and provide internal egr effects.

So Basically the system allows you to extend the powerband both lower and higher, increase efficiency and decrease emissions not to mention allowing for the use of 11.0:1 compression without detonation or excessively retarded ignition timing.
