Default Exhaust material?

Does anyone know what the GT's exhaust is made of? Is it aluminum?
I'm just wondering if it will rust.

If I recall correctly, everything in the exhaust system (headers, midpipe, O/As, etc) -minus the tips, of course- is made of T409 steel, which is a special alloy that is specifically designed to rust.

The tips are made of T304 stainless steel, which is designed to resist rusting.

Why would you design something to rust?

Because the light coat of surface rust that develops on it actually helps to keep it from rusting through. Provided, of course, that you don't keep trying to get rid of the rust.

Interesting. I just got my exhaust changed out, and the muffler shop guy told me he'd never seen a car so rusted on the bottom. I've only had the car for a few months, so I assumed the first owner lived up north or something. He cut through the pipe to get the stock system off, and the interior of the metal looked great, so this makes sense.

I bought my GT in Las Vegas and it already had rust on the drive shaft case when I picked it up. So maybe it is supposed to be this way. I haven't found any rust yet on the muffler cans, but if i do, should I just leave it alone then?

I just moved to Missourri and they put down salt last week so I spent an hour washing the underbody of the car yesterday when it warmed up.

I seem to remember reading that the whole system is stainless.
Just went down stairs and looked at all the pieces that I removed, yup, stainless from the H-pipe back.

I will have to look more closely at my exhaust gear. A few days ago, I took a peek under my car to see if it had a panhard bar & antisway bar, and while looking under there, I noticed the bodies of both my mufflers were covered in a thin layer of rust.

I however did not look at the rest of the exhaust plumbing; seeing my panhard bar and antisway bar, I quit looking.

Really? That surprises me. Only my drive shaft case has rust on it, the mufflers are still new looking and I've been driving around in winter conditions for weeks. I do wash the salt off, however.

409 Stainless is the lowest grade available. Type 304 is a much better grade. An exhaust made from 304 will outlast the vehicle.
