CAT codes after headers
#12
I've got a set of Kooks long tubes 1 7/8 on my 5.0 and had AM and Bama send me new tunes to disable my rear O2 sensors. I'm running the x-pipe with no cats, but I don't have to worry with emmisions testing in Alabama. I haven't had any codes thrown or any issues really. The only thing I really need to do is cut out the resinators and put in some mid-pipe mufflers.

I ran it today and the light didnt come on. I also didnt get stuck in traffic. With the trackey idle going the A/F ratio according to the display never dropped below 13.0:1. Only thing bugging me about the AM tunes is I cant find one that is setup for the 13 boss. Dont want to tune the car and drop horses or hurt the engine with a wrong tune. I would think they have something though.

Be nice if I could just turn off the sensors while keeping the trackey tune running. From what ive read the problem came from when I got stuck in traffic idling for about 5 minutes. Just too much fuel was dumped and the cats couldnt keep up. Ive also heard that with Jason Lund's ghost cam tune you're not supposed to run cats. I really want them there for emissions BS and to help quiet down the side pipes a bit.
Anyone used those "3 custom tunes" that come with the tuner from American Muscle?

The best way to get rid of these codes is having a custom tune turning off the rear O2 sensors. This obviously won't help you with emissions, which I know is a problem. Give a Bama a call and talk to them about making adjustments to keep the codes off and rear O2's working, since you really do still have cats (even though they're high-flow). I know of a few customers running this same setup who are getting by emissions on there Bama Performance tune.
I think a lot of it has to do with the trackey tune and how rich its low rpm's run. With a Bama custom tune, you'll be tuned for your particular LT's and mid-pipe, which will help a lot and even pick up some more power.
Our Bama Performance tuning specialists are here in the building Monday-Friday from 9AM-5:30PM EST and Saturday 10AM-3PM EST. You can hit them up directly at 888.226.9764 and they'll get you squared away!

Thanks for the info. I know it'll pick up some more ponies with a tune. As far as the emissions go, I dont have to pass a sniffer test just a visual check. Im thinking of getting an off road x-pipe also so i can mix and match parts and get different sounds. I know tuning will become an issue then for sure.

That's not a bad idea, switching mid-pipes to get the exhaust tones you're looking for. Tuning won't be a problem either! All you have to do is call up Bama after you get tunes for your current mid-pipe and ask for new tunes for the new O/R mid-pipe. We'll send you out 3 additional custom tunes for the O/R midpipe that you can store on your computer, for free. When you go to install your other O/R mid-pipe, you can upload the 3 new custom tunes for that particular mid-pipe. Basically, you can switch back and forth as much as you want, with the only hassle being the exhaust install!
That's at least the option I would go with. You could also keep one tune for each on your SCT hand held, so you don't have to upload different ones onto your tuner. Really, you can pick any 3 you want to have on your SCT hand held at one time.
Hope this helps!

After installing the headers the midpipe swaps would be a breeze. Im a professional mechanic and I was pulling my hair out. I can change a shortblock on a Honda faster than I put one header in!
Im going to make a set of block off plate for the sidepipes this weekend and see what the car sounds like without them. I love them just wished they wouldnt backfire so bad when slowing down and downshifting.
