Default Filling the MT82...

Okay so this past weekend i did the following activities, rotated my tires, changed to mobil 1 motor oil 5w-50 but stayed with motorcraft filter. New steeda air filter (to alternate with current filter needing to recharge) and swapped tranny fluids. Everything went wonderfully except......

I attempted using a hand pump from auto zone to refill my trans with Redline MTL and i must say what a nightmare! The tube that the fluid will come out is perfect size except it would only go in about 1 inch into the transmission fill hole. So i tried to pump a little anyways and it spewed back out... Anyways long story short i used an adapter and took me over an hour to fill it but i am sure i am very low do to my pump exploding and spilling on me due to pressure from going from big hole to small hole.

I am going to pick up 2 more quarts ( i am almost certain i got about 2 quarts in there currently). What is a not **** reliable hand pump to seat 2-3 inches inside the fill hole, or is it truly possible to fill from the shifter and what should i pick up as well.

I believe our transmissions take in 2.7qts but would like to add 1 - 1.5 quarts to be safe. If i put too much in would that be really bad?? Thanks again everyone! Sorry for being a newb!

Most places sell a hand pump that fits on the top of a standard quart of oil. It has a long dip tube that fits in the oil container and a long flexible hose that is on the outlet side. I poured my transmission fluid into a standard oil quart container and pumped away. Took less than 15 minutes. I always clean out a couple of quart oil containers and keep them around for this sort of stuff. Hope this helps & makes sense.

No you can't fill from the shifter. The MT-82 has a remote shifter box with a linkage that connects it to the transmission.

solaratomic is right. If you pull off the transmssion shifter cover and plate, you will be looking almost straight down on the aft linkage directly at the output shaft of the transmission. The fill point is almost 12-18" ahead of that. If you can find what I was trying to explain, it will make it a whole lot easier. The main thing is that the car needs to be level to get the correct amount of fluid in it. About 1/2" below the fill plug.

I will check it out this week / weekend, thanks!

Couple more questions for you then. Is the fill hole noticeable and reachable from this location? What is the best way to check the actually fluid level of my transmission as my pinky cannot fit in the fill hole, lol. Is the amount of transmission fluid required 2.7 quarts for us? Lastly, as long as i dont goose it or beat on it would it be back to drive through the rest of the week with low fluid (I can definitely feel it bit if i casually push it into gear it doesn't feel terrible)?

Thanks again everyone!

To be honest I do not know. If you have 2 quarts in there you are only 2/3rd's full. 2.7 quarts is the recommended capacity. You transimission is "splash lubricated", meaning the gears pick up the oil and "splash" it onto the gears, syncros, bearings, etc. Running at highway speeds may pull that level down too far, but that is only a guess on my part.

Oh dumb question, can you overfill the transmission?? If so, what are the effects? Thanks!!,

To a degree, yes you can. It calls for 2.7 quarts. If you put in "not quite 3" I would call it good enough. Should not have any problems at all. About the only side effect would be in a pressurized lube system. You would start blowong oil out of something, ie. a seal. Your transmission is not that type. It is just like a differential. The recommended oil level is to get as much of the lower gears into the oil for proper splash lube.

Fill the transmission until fluid starts seeping out of the fill hole.
