Default How hard is it to make a hood scoop functional?

I have never really had any problems with the hood and still don't. But I bought a carb spacer and thought if I went down from a 3 inch filter size to a 2 it could fit. However I didn't realize it was a 2.5 not a 3. Anyways it doesn't clear and I really like the idea of making the scoop functional and being able to run the spacer. I would just like some advice or tips before I actually decide to do it also what would be the best way to go through with it and not mess up the scoop or paint.
Thanks

The scoop covers the entire spot where a shaker would go so I could cut all of that out just still want it to be a circle cut and look nice.

dont not add a scoop on a scoop :P the cut out are are made in your hood so if you have an open element air cleaner its functional.

you could make something to fit tighter to the hood from the ac to the scoop sorta like a tray to direct the air

Certainly doable, but what are your driving habits? It will be very messy for a regularly driven car. between the Texas dust and occasional rain, it will nasty up your motor. unless you install some sort of filter

Well I will still be using the filter is a 14 by 2.5 inch K&N but I wanted to cut the hood out so the filter would up inside the scoop and so I have more clearance for the spacer. A cowl hood would be good but can't afford one right now. And not much dust where I live but it does rain sometimes.

I bought a K&N air cleaner top cover that is built from filter element allowing air to enter (by suction or force) through the lid of the air cleaner. I cut two 4x4 squares out from under my hood scoop then built box to direct air flow directly over the top of the air cleaner. Then built a foam gasket that sits between the air cleaner lid and the box, the gasket is affixed to the box and presses down on the air cleaner lid. It makes a good positive seal and forces air into the top of the air cleaner cover....

If noting else I get cold dense air direct into the carb vs hot engine / radiator air.

I made my 69 hood scoop functional. It's easy to do. The following applies to other years with steel hoods.

I used a circulating wheel dremel style cutter to slowly score the steel. Any fast cuts or rough cuts will cause ripples in the hood and yes you will see it in the paint. Leave enough room for different air cleaner/scoop options. Round off corners if you cut a square/rectangle.)

Remember, it will rain on your engine slightly anyway, but don't cut too close to the opening.
