Wiring issue!!!!!
Hey guys, I need some help. I have been trying to wire up my stereo system in my car for 3 days. and I can't get any power. I have an '84 GT, the guy who had it before hacked up all the wires and I don't know what goes to what. I am pretty sure I have all the wires for the speakers right, but I am not sure witch one is the main power wire. Can this go directly to the + side of the battery with out causeing a fire? I have the Haynes manual but I am not very good at reading this thing also I am not sure what was the original system in the car. Thanks in advance for any help.

ok, looking at the diagrams in mine (learned how to read them through an auto tech class and having to do wiring work) there's a yellow wire with a black hash (color codes are hard to read since they're so small) coming from the stereo that is the power wire. That goes to the fuse panel and then out from there. If the stock wiring is all messed up and you can't use it then wire the power wire from the stereo to the fuse panel. Just add it in with the one that it's supposed to use. You do need a fuse though either way, you don't wanna fry your radio. If you can't go through the fuse panel then you'll have to wire in an inline fuse.
Make sure you don't go straight to the battery from the head unit. If you do it will always be on and your battery will always be dead. You have to go through the ACC wire (think its yellow...not sure...I would call ford if I where you...or get a volt meter) so the radio turns off when you turn your car off. As for the speakers...get a 9volt battery and "pop" the speakers out to make sure you have all the pairs and they all work. If you need anything else let me know...I do a lot of audio/video type stuff...(just don't ask anythying about how the rest of the car works...I'm learning though).

Hmmm, i wonder if the 84 gts are like the 95s. Does an '84 have any kinda special stereo in it(like the mach setup) cause with mine when i installed a cd player the internal amps were givin me a bunch of problems. if it is then jus tmake sure to get the remote wired off, eaither that or bypass the amp completey. Just go to an audio dealer and he can get you a cross over to do this with, they aer like 8 bucks
Ok guys, thanks for the help but I am still haveing problems. I found the yellow wire and I think it has black hash marks but it was cut so short it's hard to tell. I can get it hooked up but still nothing. Now here is a stupid question, where is the fuse box? The book says that it's located under the left side of the dash. I just don't see it. Are they different in these cars or am I just blind? And for the record I am not a complete idiot, I have installed stereos in my last 3 cars. I have never run into so many problems. Thanks again guys for any more help you can provide.

Hi again! I found the fuse box that was easy, I'm just blind. What amp fuse dose the radio require? There wasn't one in there and I don't want to put the wrong type in. Thanks again everyone you have been a great help. And I hope one day I will have some tunes!

Hey Guys,
I wanted to thank you all for your help. I finally got a chance to work on the car again, and the stereo is in. Now I need to do the rest of the system. Thanks again and hopefully everything else will go smoothly.
