Default Newbie with this, help on picking amplifier???

ok, i'm kinda new at this. i understand most of the basics, but i can't figure out how big(max watts) of an amp to get for my subs. My subs are JL audio 10" JW6's. i dont remember their RMS but i think it was like 250-300. Anyways, I just got back from overseas and am now wanting to continue finishing the system. So does anyone know what size amp i should buy??? I'm kinda looking at rockford fosgates, but then again i'm clueless.

thanks,
jeff

MIght as well stick with JL amp for the JL woofers. I think you'll be fine with a 500/1.

if you are running 2 10w6 jl audio subs you would probably want atleast 500 watts. you can do 600 watt jucker if you want but best to just stick with the Jl audio amp you know its matched ohm rating and all that stuff.

...if you spent the money on JL subs, then you can drop money on the power to push them. JL are known to be power hungry and you prob won't ever be able to overpower them. I'm with seight311 on the 500/1, however a CAP may be needed in the shot future to make sure your alternator don't crap out if you like jammin full blast for long periods of time. I would suggest running at least 8ga (preferably 4ga) wire to the amp as well for a good constant power supply. Don't forget a fuse/cuircut breaker too! my2cnts

Never run anything other than 4ga wire to a JL slash series amplifier. The reason is the regulated power supply. The way these system work is that as voltage at the amp decreases, the amp will draw more current to keep from losing any power. Any lower than 10.5 volts and the JL amps simply shut off.

As for JL wire: I love JL, I sell JL, I own JL, but in all honesty, JL's wire is overpriced. Rockford and Streetwires are 2 good brands for wire for the money.

I have set your system up in many a customer's vehicle, and I can tell you that you won't be disapointed with the performance of the 500/1 amp ( I own one myself) with the JL W6's. My only advice is the make sure you have the box built by a shop to the proper specs.

By the way, If you like Rockford Fosgate already, their new P850.2 amp would be perfect for you, and you will probably be able to turn it down a little. It's better to have too much power rather than not enough. My store sells that amp for $599.

Dude, you an 9,000,000 other people in the world have no idea what they are talking about...why, oh why, do you all listen to the salesmans pitch at your local audio wharehouse? NO you do not need a cap for your two w6's. You do not need one for your two 13.5 w7's...

Memphis has an unregulated power supply

The reason that JL needs to shut down after 10.5 volts is because of limitations of the wire. After 10.5 (you can actually do the math to prove this if you've taken a basic circuit analysis cource), is that current draw goes up exponentially beyond that point. The current draw is such that the wire would be in danger of melting, or you would just start popping fuses and breakers.

2 different typed of amps, and each has their +'s and -'s.

BTW, If your amp is only geting 10 volts, you may want to start upping your charging system. Even though it works, that's not good for the amp or your speakers.

I'm not on this forum to bust ***** or anything of that nature, mainly to learn/express what I've experienced over the past years as a stang owner. It sounds as though Hisss04Cobra knows everything there is to know about electronics. If you re-read my informational post carefully, I only suggested that he MAY need a cap.....I never said run out and get one....These posts and entire forum are for informational purposes, not to get on here and bash others ***** on their past experiences. It's ultimatley up the person asking the questions to make up their mind and choose what they want from the information provided...

oh yeah........I'm not in sales either.
