Default Please help with cubic ft!

I just got my sub today and now I need to build a box. A friend of mine has experience and is going to help me aswell. For SQL, it recommends 3 cubic feet and 1 cubic foot for SPL. Im shooting for SQL! Now, since Im dumb, how big does the sides need to be to make 3 cubic feet? Also, Im supposed to use .75 MDF board, so I guess I should add 1.50 inches to each side to cancel out the board. But, anyways, whats the width and height for each side. Thanks!

To get cubic feet take the width x height x depth this will give you your cubic foot number. A couple factors to consider...you are right on target with the 1.5" deduction for the wood...but if you are doing 2 subs with a separated chamber box you will need to account for the .75 separating the subs. Also where are you going to put the box? outer dimensions of a simple 3ft^3 box would be 3'1.5" x 1'1.5" x 1'1.5" that takes into account your wood.....so inner dimensions would be 3' x 1' x 1'

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info. This is going into the trunk of my 98, and I am using a 12" sub.

How am I going to fit a 12inch sub on a 12inch piece of wood?

I would build the box so that the speaker would fit.....don't stick to my 3 x 1 x 1.....but whatever your final size is going to be make sure that the length x width x height = 3ft^3..What are the dimensions of the trunk? and remember you need to be able to get the box into the trunk....so take that into consideration as well. Do a google search for mustang woofer boxes...probably give you a good idea of what the box will look like.

Yea, that was a near "D'oh" I did many years back... Trying to fit the box into the trunk almost required greasing up the box... It fit, but never made that mistake again. Trunk openings are deceptive.

There are a couple prefab mustang boxes out there... Scosche, MTX, q-forms, JL might have one too.

I bought a Phoenix Gold Xenon 12" and it recommends 3cubicfeet for sql and only 1 for spl. So I guess I could always do it in between there as well. Ill get some measurements on the backseat opening later.

to find cubic feet when you measure in inches is this in inches say its 36 X 20 X 18=12,960 take 12,960 divided by 1728=7.5 cubes.

you also need to take into consideration whether that is ported or sealed.....they are definately 2 totally different animals.

ok, since recommended spl is 1 and sql is 3, I'm thinking I'm gonna do 2ft^3.

3 is just too large and Im not going to be able to fit it in there, and I want alittle better sound quality than 1foot, so 2 will fit nicely and be a good sounding still I suppose. Still, in height Im limited to 13.5(including wood displacement), so pretty much 12, but I have a 12 inch sub. That would cut the wood clear in half[&:]

im gonna get some more measurements...

are you sure it is only 1cu. ft. for spl? usually spl box's are big. i built a 1.75 cu. ft. box for my car and it doesnt really fit to well because of the mach 460 amp rack in the trunk. here are some box plans. http://www.caraudio.com/forum/showthread.php?t=137804
