GFs amp is turning off
Any idea why? Got a lightning sub & amp and had circuit city install it. It was working fine for the first month or so, but now it turns off. It'll just randomly power off and the bass goes bye bye. Is the amp bad or was it hooked up wrong? Loose connection? When she turns the car back on, it comes back on. Another weird thing, is I don't think they adjusted the amp or whatever. Cause even with the bass turned all the way down, it thumps pretty hard. It thumps like my sub in my car when the bass is at the normal center.

Lightning is a horrible brand. Check all the wires, make sure everything is ok. Is the amp incredibly hot when you tocuh it? Check the fuse.

there are worse amps to buy, as well as better. Does it shut off after it has been playin a while? IT is probably just going into thermal protection mode since summer is here. Since it was installed at circuit then I would go there and ask them to take a look at it.
/by the way Hisss what's in your cobra?especially since your so goddam perfect

hrmm.. i took it to circuit city (where i got it installed) and come to find out, the sub actually blew as well. they plugged another sub into the amp and it was thumping, the one in there now did nothing. when they hooked the amp up, they didn't adjust it or whatever, so it was basically at full power when the bass on the stereo was all the way down to 1. the car would default back to the middle for the bass, so it'd start really kicking the sub/amp's ***. i bought a new, better sub there to replace it with and they installed it free. i got a pioneer 600w sub.
the amp still sometimes powered off after it was installed. hasn't done it lately, just a couple times right after they were done. i don't think i saw a capaciter on the power line. think that has anything to do with it cutting off?

An amp will cut out if too much power is being drawn from it. I have a 2001 series rockford 800.2 pushing a JL 12W7. The sub takes 750W RMS and 1350W peak. My amp can only push 928W spec sheet came w/ amp. I just rewired it and I have the gains turned all the up. I hooked two power wires up to it the way it is intended to push max power. I can only have one of the power wires running to it or my amp doesn't even turn on. when both fuses are in nothing. When 1 fuse is in it works perfectly. The point I am trying to make is this: It doesn't matter how good of a amp or sub you have if they are setup in a way in which to much power is drawn through them.
A capacitor is just a backup battery. When the bass hits really hard it requires a little more power. If you have a capacitor the extra power is taken from there. A capacitor is not like having a whole other battery in your car it simply stores a little bit of power. A capacitor mainly functions to keep your headlights from dimming while stopped at a light or similar condition. A capacitor is only necessary if you have a huge system. I have two 1 farad capacitors. One for each amp and each amp pushes around 900W and I really do not need them but they are digital and are more for show.

A cap is useless, and does not help dimming with your headlights. Don't feed people false information. A capacitator is garbage. A batcap is where it's at.
