Default about quad voice coil sub

Ok I really need help I am getting this 3200rms watt hifonics sub with quad voice coils. http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_5652.html. It's has quad 2 ohms. Does that mean that each voice coil has 2 ohms making the sub 8 ohms total. If so does this mean that the amp(s) has to come to a total of 8 ohms. (either one 8 ohm amp, two 4 ohm amp, or four 2 ohm amp, or something similair) And if I am correct on this information is this all only true for mono amps. Will it change up everything if I consider 2 channel amps because I will have to bridge them and what not. Thanks alot guys, please help me.

Default RE: about quad voice coil sub

If the sub has 4 (quad) 2 ohm voice coils, than the way you wire those voice coils together will decide your total impedance. If you wire 2 of the voice coils together in series, wire the other 2 voice coils together in series, and then wire the 2 pairs together in parallel, you will have a 2 ohm load.

Another scenario would be to wire all the voice coils in series and then yes, you would have an 8 ohm load.

You could also wire 2 of the voice coils in parallel, then the other pair in parallel, and then the 2 pair together in series and that would also give you a 2 ohm load.

It will depend on the output of them amp as to what configuration you should use.

Just remember, when wiring in series, impedance (R) is calculated using the following equation:

Rtotal = R1 + R2 + R3 + ...

and the calculation for parallel is...

Rtotal = (R1 x R2)/(R1 + R2)

Hope that helps.
