you will already have a +12v ignition back there, you will be missing a +12v constant. You can tap a constant fuse, the ignition, or even the cig lighter for the constant.

DO NOT tie into the ignition wire to gain power for stereo. As mentioned by ttocs, you should have power there somewhere. If you CANNOT find switched power back there, you may consider running a relay "triggered" by ignition wire, and pull power from an alternate source (this is a LAST resort, but will work just fine)

the switched wire on the radio is a low current draw as all it does is tell the radio when the key is on, the radio's power is supplied through the +12v constant.

Y is it not ok to get it at the ignition? Been installing professionally for over 10 yrs and done it a 1000 times.Heck on alot of newer GM's where there is no +12v switched, you have no choice but to hit the ignition.

Thanks for the heads up on the 12v is trigger only. That explains why the 12v constant power wire was so fat when doing the stereo in my '02. I had a '72 Vega many, many years ago and put new system in that, 6x9's baby [8D]. So I am old school, and used to be the other way around. Since that is the case, not a prob to tie into the ignition wire to get power for stereo. Without knowing what kind of power draw the stereo has, and not realizing the 12v red is "trigger" only (so very little draw of amperage) I stand corrected.

I am just a big fan of relays as you can pull a single power wire from battery or whatever, and run whatever amp draw you like, and have it triggered by even the smallest switch or light.

no reason to be humbled, I was just wondering if you knew something I didn't. Knowledge shared is knowledge gained.............

the red wire is identicle to the remote wire on an amp although it will draw slightly more current then the remote. You are correct that relays are almost always a good thing and as long as you use them right you will be safer.
