Default Raising the Soundstage

I've got an 05 mustang with the shaker 500. I replaced the 8 inch subs with a 6.5 inch woofer my making mdf circles so i could mount them in the stock spot. Took off the stock grills and put them in so they look stock. I then made 2 more mdf mounts and put the tweeters (they're 6.5 inch components) where the 5x7 stock speakers were.

Not wanting to ruin anything in the door I didn't want to put the tweeters any higher but I got to thinking and seeing as I'm the only driver I think I'm going to get an extra pair of those plastic triangular pieces (where the stick to adjust the side mirrors is on the driver's side) and cut out a hole to mount my tweeters there. I haven't listened to them in that location but it certainly should raise the soundstage. Now does anyone think that the tweeters will then be too far from the main woofers, or should that work better? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Also does anyone know where I could order another pair of those plastic pieces? Dealership?

I done the same thing except mine didn't come with the shaker so i made a custom enclosure for the 6.5 in the bottom. But here's a picture of the audiobahn set i installed.

A couple comments.

1.get explanation of the install, NOW GET US SOME PICS!!!

2.What amp are you running have you purchased one yet.

3. If you haven't yet purchased an amp, give me a budget.

4. It might be a good idea to mount the 6.5's and tweets in the 5x7 location and then putting some 8' back in the doors. These are awesome drivers for midbass. It would raise your soundstage up and forward.

4. Another option would be to get a CDT image enhancemet kit like so...

I've installed and mounted everything, just need to get it tuned but like I said I think I'll be moving the tweeters. The set up is 6.5 inch Polk SR 6500 components up front, powered by an Alpine MRV F345 that I have bridged, in back Clif Design 57.5 (I think that's the model, nothing fnacy just some good rear fill) which are powered by the head unit, head unit is an Alpine CDA 9857, for a sub I have a SEAS Lotus 12 inch powered by a JL 500/1.

I'm happy with the set-up, but I think I will be sawing off the rear of the stock sub enclosures as it's hurting my mid-randge on the Polks. I've heard them and they're capable of way more bass than I'm getting now. Also once I move the tweeters I think the imaging will be much better. I'm a firm believer that 3 ways are unecessary and I have more than ample bass with the Lotus and JL amp. The Polks have great midrange and once tuned I think it will all blend together nicely. That's why I went with the Lotus, it's supposed to blend in with the mid range better than nearly any other sub.

Also you mentioned putting the 6.5 inch in the 5x7 locations, they're much too large for that what do you mean? Make another bracket?

How do those CDT's hook up with the rest of the system? Supposing I were to intergrate those onto my dash how would those wire in with everything else? The polk's have their own crossovers fyi. Thanks for the help.

That sounds like a great setup. Throw some pics up so we can check it out.

I did a lot of work installing my CDT HD-62cf's in the factory locations. Luckily the tweet is in the A pillar and mywoofers, low in the doors, have excellent off-axis dispersion. I actually put an enclosure behind my mids and although it tightened up the midrange, it really made the midbass suck. My solution was not to saw off the back end, but instead to drill a number of holes in the back/bottom of the enclosure to allow the speakers to operate IB, but still have some enclosure pressure to work against. The result was very accurate midbass and tight smooth midrange.

With CDT comps there is actuallya place in the crossover to include the image enhancement. If you don't have CDT comps, it is simply connecting it to a power source and then using the poteniometer to adjust the volume of the speakers.

Another thought might be to angle mount your tweets towards the driver with some sort of recessed adapter plate.

Do you have those rears running full range? If so, your soundstage would be much better if you low passed them at around 500 hz.

Making a 6.5 fit in place of 5x7 is as easy as tracing the factory speakers on a piece of hdf, cutting out the shape and then mounding the speakers to the adapter. I have build and installed home made adapters twice and will more then likely have to do it on my next vehicle as well.

Here's a couple of pictures of the enclosure for ya. I think it matches the door alot better than the round shaker ones.
