Mach 460 Amp?
I am looking to replace my factory stereo but I have a Mach 460 system with the tape and cd head units. Is there an amp connected to it? Is it behind the head units? Can they be connected to an aftermarket head unit?
Thanks for the help, my '94 already had an aftermarket head unit when I bought it, so this will be my first time dealing with all factory equipment.
Edit: Changed 360 to 460

It's 460 FYI.
No, the factory head unit is connected to the amplifier, it is behind your current HU, in your dash. You rear ones are in an amp rack in the rear deck of your car, where your rear speakers are also mounted. Theres a harness that you can use to plug an aftermarket head unit into your 460 amps, it's in the information thread sticky at the top of the A/V forum. If you don't want to use the Mach system you can run your aftermarket unit into aftermarket amps.
I suggest reading through all of the information thread. Theres alot of FAQ's and answers in there.

Lol thanks, I must be thinking Xbox 360
Thanks for the info, and I will check out that FAQ. I will probably retain the stock amps for the speakers since I can, and just use my amp on the subs.

I have the Mach 460 in my 04 GT and from what I've been able to gather, it's a real pain. The 460 sounded pretty good and then I swapped out the head unit for an In-Dash DVD player and it killed about 80% of the bass that I had in the car. It dramatically improved the quality of the mids/highs, but the bass was gone.
From what the installers have told me (from 2 or 3 different shops), if you want to upgrade the Mach 460 you have gut the entire system and start from scratch because of the way everything is tied together.
If you're looking to upgrade the system, get everything you need and have everything done at once or do what I did. I got the head unit installed first. Then added the Subs/Amp and if I'm not happy with the sound then, I'm going to replace all 8 speakers. I'm pretty disappointed with the way the Mach 460 system is setup. The Mach 1000 may not have been a bad choice, it at least had twice the power and subs already included.

your installers told you wrong, welcome to the forum. you can get the mach to rock with a little bit of tweeking. I show how I did it on page 2 of my cardomain page in my sig. The bass is less because the factory amps are use to a much higher output level from the factory deck. Depending on how they wired it you probably need to boost the signal to the bass amps which I did through the use of a line driver, it is basically a rca level amp that boosts the rca signal voltage.
