Damn 4ohm speakers!

Appearantly, the guy who owned my '02 GT before me,put in an Alpine headunit, then smoked a f*ckload of crack cocaine and put 4ohm speakers in it,and bypassed the amps. Does anyone know how i can drop the 4ohm aftermarket to 2ohm,so they won't cut out when hooked up to the amps? or if i can just get a stock system somewhere? they're polk audio speakers - pretty expensive from what i've seen.

You will need to take yourtwo 4ohm speakers and wire them in parallel in order to get the resistance down to 2ohms. Problem is that if you only have two speakers and wire them together in parallel you will end up using only one chanel of your amp, and I defenitely wouldn't recomend that you bridge a stock amp (thats where you take a two chanel amp and combine the chanels into one). Get an additional set of speakers, wire them in parallel so that you have 2 speakers at 2 ohms on each chanel, left and right.
Here is a diagram from crutchfield that illustrates a one chanel amp with 2 speakers in parallel: http://www.crutchfield.com/S-F2ehuJi...ech/kb133.html
Your amp probably has two chanels, so that is how you would end up using the 4 speakers.
So where do you put the extra set of speakers? How about you get some tweeters and mount them any where it's convenient. As long as they are 4ohms and can handle the wattage, you should be ok.
you guys are making this way harder then it needs to be. Look at page 2 of my sig. There should be a hrns in your dash similar to the one that I am pointing to that will allow you to easily wire your alpine radio around the factory amps to power your speakers and fix your problem. If you find the hrns you only need to wire your decks speaker level outputs to that hrns and you are done.
please ignore this. You do not need nor want to wire your speakers into the factory amps.

I could not disagree more, though i am using an aftermarket headunit with my stock 460 amps and speakers(with NO SPEAKER POP), you absolutely DO NOT have to remove everything nor do you have to bypass, there is always a way to modify an electrical signal to your requiremnts, the downfall is that it can be complicated. Do the setup the way you want to.
However, for quality I have to agree, the 460 speakers and amps are not going to cut it, and you should bypass if sound quality is of huge importance and you want to keep the install relatively simple. I personally like the 460 setup, so i kept it.

hey dopey read it again. I told him that he should NOT install aftermarket speakers to factory amps. I have a degree in electronics and understand that you can manipulate most(NOT all) signals to get what you want from them but I am not afraid to say it is dumb to hook speakers that do not say ford/jbl to factory amps.

yea ? Ive been working in an engineering firm for the past three years, i work with medium and high voltage all day long and am a few classes away from my EE, so dont throw around your scholarly weight with a "holier than tho art" attitude. If I made a mistake, fine, I apologize. Seems like your not afraid to tell anyone anything, for someone with so much knowledge, you react in rather ignorant ways.

I didn't mean "dopey" in a mean way, sorry ifit caught you wrong. Glad to hear you are pursuing a degree, sorry to hear its in engineering
(I am a tech(sorry preal
lol)). My scholorly weight, now that really makes me laugh as it probably will you too since my degree is fron ITT.... BUT, I HAVE worked with something high tech
(remember the commercials?). ITT got me the piece of paper that I needed to get employers to look at me and I certainly did learn a bit while I was there but most of my electronics experience and almost all of my car audio experience is from real world learnings.
I jump in pretty fast when people start giving advise that is a little off the mark or incomplete here(stick around and you will see). I am guilty of that as much as most others from time to time.
