Default Amp/Sub opinions...

I have a 2005 GT with the Shaker 500 system. I want to add a sub/amp to the rear to give it some more kick - but not overpowering and not too boomy...just nice, tite punch. Anyone have any experience with this combo?

I went to CarToys and sort of balked at the price by the time they were done - JL amp (forget the wattage), custom box, 2 10" JL subs, installation, wiring, line out converter, installation and taxes the quote was like $850...too damn much.

I dropped by Best Buy and they were running a kit special...

Dual 200Wx1 RMS XIA2340 Amp
Rockford Fosgate P1 10" Stage 1 Sub
Q-Logic 10" sealed Sub Box
wiring, line out converter, install
$350

Seemed like a hell of a deal. They install it Tuesday so I won't know how it will sound till then.

I thought about getting the Rockford Fosgate amp with the same power output rating but it was like $150 more.

What JL Subs were you looking at. Look honestly if you want something that just adds a little bass, and doesn't over power you whole system I would get 2 JL 12 W0's They run about 80 each, and a box isn't expensive at all, For an amp i would go with a Directed Electronics 300D which is only around 170, I promise you, you would be very pleased with this setup. From working with car stereos for the past couple years that would be a good system, that is really inexpensive, and will last. The Rockford Fosgate P1's are really a horrible speaker, we sell them where and rarely will try to push those on people, they blow really easy, the surrounds fall apart, and just the Sound Quality is not great, I use to enjoy Rockford equipment until all this new crap started comeing out, just so they could change there look. Guess thats why i've always gone with JL and Directed amps, Never had any problems.

I try to stay away from car toys....every thing is WAY too expensive.

I bought my stereo system at best buy and circuit city.
800 watt kenwood amp - $230 @ best buy
2 12" infinity reference subs - $100/ea @ Circuit city
Q-Logic box for 2 12's - $60 @ circuit city
Line out converter - $30ish @ best buy
$520 total and I installed it myslef in like an hour.

I honestly dont think you will be too impressed with the Dual amp...its an offbrand and is over rated(i know this from personal exp.). Also like 98stngfrk said the new Rockfords arent great at all.

Yea, i agree with what he said about the Dual brand...

thats like buying sams choice, or flavorite food or something..

go with kenwood, JL, stuff youve heard of,,

i know youre not looking anymore, and probably wouldnt want this anyways,,
but in my 89 grand marquis, i have a kenwood 1000watt amp,
and a MTX tri sub enclosure with three 500 watt subs..

sounds VERY good, but probably a bit much for what you wanted

good luck , those promo deals are pretty sweet

I was in your situation in my last car. I bought an Alpine Type S 10 inch (130) with a 700 Monochannel Alpine Amp (140) and a Subzone 10" Slotted Vent box(130!) But I sounded better than my friends 2 12"s Audiobahns, Alpine is more clear than just about any sub I've heard in that range, it hits really nice and can hit really hard for a car.
I'd suggest Alpine for a cheaper price range.

I upgraded both the amp and sub...

Ended up getting a Rockford Fosgate Punch P2002 600W (200W RMSx1 bridged) Amp and a Rockford Fosgate Punch Phase 2 P210S4 10" sub (200W RMS/400 Peak).

It definitely has changed the SPL in my car....and it definitely kicks. Clean base and no rattling (yet anyways). I don't understand how/why someone would run dual subs This single puts out more than I'd ever want....with the gain on the Amp only at about 1/4 I still have the boost turned all the way down on the remote...its strong.
