SOOOO.... I'm driving to my girlfriends when this woman steps out in front of me and makes me slam on my brakes. I come to a screeching halt and don't hit her. Everything's good. So i start to keep going and start to smell something burning. I look down and the foot well is FILLED with smoke! I figured that i had blown a brake line or something like that, so i stop the car and look under the hood and there is nothing. I look under the car and there is nothing. I then stand up and notice smoke coming up from around my top, which is down in the boot! So i stood there for a second pondering what new car to get if my car is on fire, when i connect the two places that i see smoke coming from. MY STEREO WIRES. WELL.... I had taken out my sub and amp in the beginning of the summer and left the wires in the trunk, the signal, remote power and ground. I taped off the end of the power wire, BUT NOT THE REMOTE WIRE. The remote wire had come in contact with the ground and had melted all the wire wrap!! Luckily my car did not catch fire or melt anything important. Italso burned through the carpet under the door sill and a little in the trunk.

Just a lesson for anyone who is planning on leaving wiring ran through their car. Tape off ALL ENDS for safety!

yeah always cover up bare wire, with tape or wire caps

Lucky it didn't ground your car and surge your engine management system.

You can blow your entire engine like that... I learned to tape off everything early when my speakers once blew out...

 

ALL POWER WIRES MUST BE FUSED...........

I loved it when a customer would come in with a black line from the battery to the trunk. We installers take pics of stuff like that in the bay and laugh and laugh and laugh.... We have to enjoy what we can.
