fox ashtray switch
the black wire that goes to the outside shield of the cig lighter is the ground, the wire that goes to the middle(looks blue and maybe white) is the constant. The blue and red is the dimmer wire, it will have 7-12v on it with the lights on. be sure to insulate it if your not using it or it will blow all your dash lights fuse.
the dimmer wire should not be used for anything except for lighting that you want to be switched with the parking lights. The constant should supply power for what you need but it will be on all the time.

The last few times i've plugged in my radar detector to the cig lighter its blown a fuse (fuse for the horn, clock, and the light panel next to the clock telling me of the highbeams, low fuel ect.) on my 85 mustang GT. Why is it doing this, i dont really understand?
What is terrible? I answered your question as to what the wires were. If you didn't like the answer, then you didn't like yer question.
You are looking for a +12v switched wire. There should be one down there in the convertable hrns even if you don't have a vert. Otherwise you can look behind the radio or at the fuse box.

Try unplugging the detector from the cord, then plugging just the cord in. We need to find out if there is a short in the cord or the unit. Start a new post and we can help ya.
