Default best s197 enclosure and sub question

how good is the ebay one? where they fire upward.... also at the moment I have 2 12inch alpine subs in my car running off a profile baja 1000watt amp. They are loud but are not the best quality at high volumes... I think its the box... it has holes for terminals but they are ghetto plugged up.... the subs are type e alpines.. i was thinking of upgrading to type rs.. do u think its my box... subs? or amp that is giving me bad quality at high volumes.

I would say its ur amp prob clipping and distorting as you turn it up making the system sound like ***. But could be ur box. Id start with a new amp and as far as the type r's i wouldnt spend my money on $$$ paper weights.

imagine a sine wave on a graph(a sideways S), this is your music. The audio portion of the signal would be on the X scale(the left to right) and the volume of the signal would be the Y scale(top to bottom). A good amp will take a small signal and make it really big on the Y scale to make it loud. As the volume increase the signal shape on the X scale will stay the same but it will get much taller. Every amp will be able to make that signal as tall as possible until it finally can no longer keep the signal clean. When it reaches its max point it will "clip" the very top and bottom of the sign waves off and make a flat line of voltage at itshighest point. To the ear it sounds like a popping noise, to the speaker it is the equivent of you red-lining your engine for the time it is clipped. A clipped signal is pure DC voltage which in the world of speakers there is nothing worse. A small amp(like a head unit) will reach this point much faster then a true high power amp. It is safer to have more power going to a speaker then it is to have less power going to it in the same way a dull knife will cut you faster then a sharp knife......

You can feel a whole lot more wattage through most speakers then they are rated as long as you keep the signal clean and un-clipped.

great explanation ttocs!

For the OP, it could be a combination of things, box dimensions, box integrity, amplifier setup, head unit setup, lots of variables. could also be that the subs are not intended to reach the levels you want.
