Need help with aftermarket head unit install
I was looking to get some help on this install that I'm about to do on my 2002 GT. I've been aftermarket installs on three other of my cars so I know the basics, but I was wondering what I'd run into thats specific to my GT. I know that I don't have the Mach 1000 system, so I'm pretty sure that I have the Mach 460. From my understanding I need a special tool to remove the stock head unit as well as some special wiring. Can anyone help me out?
Here is the head unit i just got: Alpine ida-x001

first we need to know EXACTLY what you do have in the car. The 460 is easily distinguished as it has mach460 written on every speaker grill. That year also had a simple mach stereo that was inbetween the standard ford and the mach.
Alright, well there is nothing in my car that says Mach 460 on it, but my tweeters do say mach on them. The only other thing that may help is that my stereo has a 6 cd changer.
With your model car you do not use the ford keys. Instead your dash just pops off and the radio is secured by two 7mm's. As for everything you need to integrate into your mach460 system is the dash kit for 01-04 mustangs and the Metra harness # 70-5519.
The harness will come with Two plugs. A 16 pin main harness and another 8 pin smaller harness. Both will be used. Most people will have another bigger 20 pin square plug from the factory side, this plug is not used. The 16 Pin main harness controls the power, and the highs (Tweeters) off the radio itself. The smaller 8 pin harness is the actual Amp integration piece which allows you to connect the woofers to low end leads and turn on the Amplifiers that controls all your bass/mid-bass. All you do from here basically is hook up the wires from the wiring harness color for color to the back of the radio. Just make sure you hook all your amp grounds (black/white wire) and your regular ground together, and hook up the remote wires (blue/white) to the remote output from behind the radio. Most people get a turn on “Thumpâ€. This is because Ford amplifiers work off of the mysterious 6 volt amp turn on. Most aftermarket players send 12 volts down their remote wire. To fix this, all you have to do is wire a 1K Ohm resistor In-Line with the remote wires. The RCA ends from the smaller plug will plug into your Rear Pre-Outs on the back of your Aftermarket player. You cannot balance but you can still fade. Hope this helps.

i thought on the 460s you needed to gut everything and rewire and only half the speakers would work? is that harness up there an adapter for it?
also what if i wanted to replace speakers? could i just un plug and re plug new ones or would i deff have to rewire for that?

ignore everything you have heard about the 460. It inspiresa knee jerk reaction at most shops that have just not taken the time to get to know the 460. It is actully one of the easiest "premium" systems and with a little work it will rock with a new head unit. If you replace the HU then you can replace the speakers. The tweeters are a 4 ohms speaker and the woofer an 8 ohm so if you do not replace the deck you have to match these impedences and it ishard to find a quality 8 ohm woofer.
Start with the deck, and if you want to switch the speakers then that is the next to go. Addin a deck and small sub to the mach system is more then most people need.
Page 2 give a quick how-to on my mach 460 sytem in my 94, or that was in my 94gt.
