and as for testing the subs outside the box, thats not good for the sub...at all.
Explain your reasoning behind that...

You cooked it, well you know the old saying, "You get what you pay..." Oh! But not with JL.
Free Air is NOT good for a sub, especially if he is putting RMS wattage to the sub as it is in Free Air, Unless the sub is designed for it.

definatly smoked the coils. you can free air a sub but not all the time, thats when major damage occurs.

Beware Teh RMS Wattagez!!!1!!

ninetysixenko, The suggestion made originally, was just for visually checking the sub outside the box. That will not hurt the sub.

and by the way, go read up a bit on current and power...

visibly checking the sub obviously wont hurt it. but doing a free air test any longer than 5 seconds or so can severly hurt the sub. again, especially if he's using the amp to test it, and the amp's still set to the power sub, like it was when it was in the box. now using a 9V battery to test the sub would be a good way to test it. another good way to test it without damaging the sub would be to invert the sub, so you can see/hear the coils.

and why do i have to read up on current and power?

True it does cost quite a bit of money to get it fixed from JL they pretty much give you a new sub they replace all the moving parts in the sub.

as long as you keep the signal to the sub clean it will not matter if it is in the box or not(as far as damage). Running a sub out of a box at max volume and into clipping is just as dangerous as sending a clipped signal while it is in the box.

So what I am trying to say is clipping = bad

ninetysixyenkoi think ur lost 5 sec?? i played my new dd9518 just yesterday (free air) foratleast 6 mins powerd by a us 2000xwired at 4 ohm so was only seeing about 1600 or so watts but damage comes when u clip a sig being inside or outside of box dosent matter as long as ur sending a clean signal.
