Bought sub, need help.
Ok, I bought a used 10 inch alpine type 4 subwoofer in a box and I am having some difficulty with it. First off, I dont know how many watts rms mine has...its the older style, but, I keep seeing 500 rms some places and 300 watts on other sites. How do I know for sure? I dont want to overdrive it. I am going to buy an amp for it because I found out apparently my 2/1 alpine amp wont work very well with a 4 ohm sub...didnt know what the hell that meant so I am now looking for a mono amp to power it, but I need to know what wattage amp to buy. Thanks
Yeah pull the sub out of the box and get the model number off the back of the magnet. Then go on alpines website and do a search for that model number.
The type r can be a dual 4 ohm or dual 2 ohm (voice coil)sub. If the sub is dual 4 ohm sub, then a mono amp will be the best match for it(wiring it in parrell), or if it is a dual 2 ohm sub then, a 2 channel amp(wiring it in series) or a 1 ohm stable mono amp(wiring it in parrell) will work the best. With dual voice coil subs there is 2 different wire confideration series or parrell.
Parrell+dual 4 ohm sub= 2 ohms at the amp(mono amp)
Series+dual 4 ohm sub= 8 ohms at the amp( higher ohm less power to the sub)
Parrell+dual 2 ohm sub= 1 ohm at the amp(alot of amps can not handle 1 ohm)
Series+dual 2 ohm sub= 4 ohms at the amp(2 ch. amp brigded)
The new type r 10s are 400 watts RMS.
