SN-95 Mach 460 problem with amps
My 94 GT had an aftermarket Pioneer head unit installed with the incorrect harness when I bought the car. I purchased the Amp bypass harness and had to fool around with it (ended up running a wire to the fuse box) but got it working. It sounds great until I turn the volume a little past halfway up, it sounds like the amps shut off. I can turn the volume down then the amps will kick back in after a few moments. Also there is a whizzing sound that comes and goes, it sounds like the distributor is sending signals to the radio but it occurs if I have a cd in as well.
I have changed the lower rear speakers to 6x9's and the previous owner changed the top rear speakers. Stock speakers in the front. No subs installed.
Should I plan on ditching the amps and all the wiring and get a whole new set-up or is this a simple problem that I can fix?
Any help would be much appreciated, Thanks

Yes the 6x9's are wired up to factory wiring in place of the 5 1/2's or whatever ford put there. Required some modifaction to the mounts but I did not alter the wiring. The amps actually cut out. Sorry for the fuzzy wording. All the bass and '***' of the music cuts out and it sounds like just the tweeters are playing. Moments after I turn the volume down they cut back on.
two things here then. The factory amps are not made to run aftermarket speakers as the factory uses a strange 8 ohms speaker so when you swap in a standard 4 ohm replacement the amp does not like it. Bypass the amp and run the speakers straight of off the headunit. You can do this by simply connecting the 6 x 9 to the tweeter speaker wires since you bypassed the tweeter amp already. Disconnect the tweeter as you will not need it with the x 9s back there.
2.) when you bypassed the factory tweeter amp you also bypassed the factory cross over. Your 2.5" tweeters are not made to play full range or bass in general. I would recommend using some 100 microfarad capacitors as passive cross overs to take the bass out, they are available at radio shack.

Thanks.
I just plan on bybassing those amps until I replace them and disconnect the tweeters.
I'll also start looking at the set-up some of you guys have so I can plan my new system out.
Any suggestions?
I'll plan on getting a 10" or 12" sub and new speakers for the front as well. I know nothing about amps so any guidence in that department would be awesome.
Thanks again for all your help.

my cardomain shows my mustangs system, I am knee deep in my trucks at the moment. I am putting in a simple 10" and some 5.25" componants speakers with an amp to push them both.
