radio quit working....kinda
for the past two days my radio has been getting a workout cruising the strip and such, having it turned up loud for hours at a time.
i had it up loud again and it just quit.
i can turn on the radio, the screen will fold down, i can adjust the volume, take out/put in cd's and adjust all the settings. but it won't play sound. if i turn it all the way up i can hear it playing very quietly but my rear speakers don't work. (i put an ear to all my speakers)
i highly doubt all of my 8 speakers blew at the same time. (6 pioneers in factory locations and two tweeters)
i noticed that my cd's are pretty hot when i switch them out, but its been that way ever since i got it.
no, i don't have a warranty the cd player came with the car.
please help this is a 620 dollar head unit.

it's called clipping. chances are if you're using external amps they are in protect mode unless they are crappy amps then they're probably just blown. if it's a $620 deck and your using the imternal amp, chances are the internal amp is in protect mode from playing it too hard. Usually an amp will come out of protect once whatever malfunction caused it is corrected (i.e. thermal protect/the amp cools down)
It's possible that you blew the internal amp in the head unit or a fuse. If it doesn't work after it's cooled off then I'd check my fuses and if that wasn't the problem I'd pull the unit and have it looked at.
fuses are fine. it didn't work after it cooled down. i'm not using an external amp.
how much would it typicaly be to have a shop replace the internal amp, if thats possible?

better off buying a whole new unit. but before you go do that you might want to consider just having an audio shop do some trouble-shooting. it could be something very simple. if your gonna buy a new unit and you're not running external amps, look into a lower end alpine or pioneer. check ebay--you can get a brand new alpine for 140-150. anything by pioneer, alpine or eclipse will do fine but i strictly use alpine in the last few years.
Edit: stupid me--i forgot to tell you that if any of your speaker wires are grounding out against bare metal than the end result could be the same as your describing. Also test each individual speaker to see if its blown. you do this by using a multi-meter and putting it on the ohm setting then put the red wire on the positive terminal and the black wire on the negative terminal--for a 4 ohm speaker you should be reading somewhere between 3.6 and 4.0. occasionally a blown speaker will cause the rest of the speakers to stop working as well. i know it sounds strange but trust me--i know this from experience.

ok. thanks for all your help. i will check the speakers. also when i hooked up my tweeters i spliced into the rear speaker wires. could this be a problem?
the tweets could be blown because they are wired to play a certain frequency range only--by splicing them in without a crossover you are sending them a full range signal--frequencies they are not capable of playing. the driver attempts to play those freqs and quite often they blow pretty rapidly but sometimes they hang on for quite awhile before they finally die.
or if you hook up a new external amp to your head unit via the rca cables and rewire your speakers so that they know hooked up to the external amp then yes you can hook up the external amp.
