Default new stereo too bright at night

I was wondering if anyone might have any suggestions. I just installed a great Pioneer head unit in my 06. The Shaker 500 kept spitting out CD's no matter how often I cleaning it. Anyway the Pioneer has all the features I wanted and a great-looking "organic" blue display. The only problem is that the display - even though it does dim when I switch on the headlights - is too bright at night. There is no adjustment of the illumination level... it can be turned off, but that's a pain because you can't even see the clock then. I've read in a coupe of posts on other sites and it seems this problem happens with other makes and models of car stereos too. I read that one guy was going to apply window tint to the display. I thought maybe vinyl cling film in a tinted variety might work... that would only involve cutting the piece to size and sticking it on. Any thoughts or suggestions? Thanks!
