Default 400-500W Amp needs a sub

Hi guys,

I need some suggestions, please. I have a 400-500 watt @ 2ohms mono amp installed in my 08 mustang that used to have some crappy Sony XPod 4-ohm subs connected to it. I'm trying to find a new subwoofer to pair to this amp because:

1. Those speakers are old and kinda crappy.
2. I would much rather have a single, more powerful speaker to conserve on truck space and weight.

I've been looking around for a 2 ohm SVC or 4-ohm DVC sub that meets my wattage ratings, but I'm not coming up with too much in my price range (hoping to get something for under 150). I'm not looking for crazy high end quality, but I am concerned that anything less than 400W RMS is going to be in danger of frying.

Any recommendations?

Awesome drivers and are a little bit less than your 150 budget. Can I ask what type of enclosure do you plan on using?

Here are some other drivers

Thanks for the links! I guess I should have looked around a bit more before saying it was hard to find subs in my wattage range, configuration, etc. I browse Crutchfield almost exclusively when looking for this kind of stuff in the past, but they do not seem to carry what I am looking for this time around. It seems like there are subs out there that do fit the bill, though.

I must admit I'm a little out of touch with which brands are decent when talking subwoofers, as well as what kinds of "features" to look for. Do you have personal experience with the SSA or IA brands?

As far as the box, I think I prefer the tighter sound of the sealed boxes over the ported ones; I'd like something that isn't just about how loud it is, but has a good sound as well (SQ over SPL), but I realize that I'm going to get what I pay for to an extent. I have a 12" sealed box already that is just under 1 cu ft and I was thinking about getting a 12" sub to put in that, and then down the road maybe get a 1.25 cu ft box (I think I'm missing some low end with this smaller box, but I'm not sure if it's the box or the Sony XPlod sub).

EDIT: I'd also like to add that the 400-500W that the amp puts out is RMS. I'm worried about hooking up a 300W RMS sub to this amp; should I be?

I have one of these, and it pounds with my 500wrms kenwood! Absolutely love it. They're about $130+ on ebay.

I have used the IA 187, loved it. Awesome driver for the money. Output is amazing for the power, and they work well for different types of applications. The SSA driver is more sq oriented iirc
You can get a ported box to sound as good if not better than a sealed box. Depends on how well the box is designed for the driver.
You will be ok hooking up a 500rms amplifier to a 300rms subwoofer. Doubt the extra 200rms is enough to make the driver fail thermally
