Default shaker500 vs shaker1000

Hi
I have been lurking these forums, for awhile and found alot of good info, but I have run upon a question that I have not been able to find a post on.lol

My kid has a 05 mustang with a shaker500 and her cd player has jammed up.
I have a chance to buy a shaker1000 headunit cheap enough.

My question is can I just replace the 500 with the 1000, without any mods, to the wiring etc??

I know from what I have read on here that the best thing would be to go aftermarket, but I am a old fart and I just want to get her back in the tunes as quickly and easily as possible, so I can get back to work on my 51 chevy coupe!lol
Thanks Duane

I think you'd be able to...you obviously won't have the subwoofer that is part of the 1000...also, did the 1000 headunit come out of an 05? I'm not sure there was a difference between 05-7 and 08&09...I'm sure some guru will chime in...There are alot of readers on the subsection s197 (above this one on the main page)...may want to post your question there...51 chevy = sweet!

It is possible to do a Shaker 500 to 1000 however I've been doing some research and it is more complicated to do than most people think.

Sometime in mid production 07 they switched to that Chrysler antenna connector. So you may have to get an adapter to fit the standard motorola male end (example pic /w link below) of the '05 depending on the year the 1000 was taken out of, of course this only applies to 05-09 shakers, after that they're not that standard double-din. The rest, other than the lack of a rear sub-woofer set and wiring to the rear for it, is the same. If you can get a shaker 1000 out of a 05-06, you're set.

Truthfully, if you get another one, expect the same shiznat to happen down the road. So you're really likely to just be throwing more money and time at it later.

Thanks for the info
I bought a 2006 shaker 500 for of Feebay last night pretty cheap.
I know you all are right about having to get into this again though.

I guess I just kinda wimped out this time!!
Too old to understand and appreciate this stuff!!LOL
I am from the era when radios had a couple of big ***** and if you wanted station memory, you had 6 ***** to pull out and push in!LOL
I do have a pioneer cd player in the glove box of my 51 chevy, but I have to admit I havent figured out all the tiny buttons yet.lol
I guess I am still of the old thinking of getting my sweet sounds from my 3/4 camed, triple carbed, open exhausted stovebolt!LOL
Anyway again thanks for all the help.

Default Questions regarding shaker 500 (2008 Stang)

I have a 2008 Mustang and it has the Shaker 500 system in it. It totally lacks in mid range quality. I thought about changing out the speakers, but can't find any specs on the sizes. Also, has anyone out there upgraded this system (if it's possible) with an equalizer, or is there another brand that fits into the same space as the shaker?

thanks, Kim

Hi Kim,

Our model years 2005-2009 all use essentially the same thing(s) stereo headunit, speaker, and factory amp wise. Replacing the headunit is usually the way to go to get more out of everything right away with as little fuss as possible. Usually the pioneer touch-screen units are what many choose.

As to the speakers themselves for the 500, you have 2 factory amp powered sub-woofers 8' in size. To replace you need that or smaller, and usually shallow mount ones, even then you usually need to make a ring to fit to space it better. The door and rear speakers(headunit amplified) are 6x8. 5x7's will also work.

Check the stickies above in this section, couple of walkthroughs to replacing your head unit and what you will need. You may need a PAC unit (CDR-FRD1) for your model year, as they changed the turn-on halfway through the model year to be CANBUS controlled. That or run a new turn-on line from the SJB(smart junction box/fuse box in the passenger side kick panel). And your antenna will need the motorola adapter for 08.

These touch screens will fit in the same space? Would you start by replacing that before changing out the speakers?

Thanks-Kim

Yes. If you mean with nothing further than the head-unit, then no. You will need the proper din mounting frame for our Ford model years for the head-unit to be attached to to mount into that same spot. Most of them do both single and double-din standard head-units. Usually the metra kit.

I assume your fairly new to attempting something like this, so I'll break this down, you will need:
the right factory harness adapter(s),
wire strippers,
crimping kit,
the mounting bracket,
the proper 8-10mm sockets,
and a phillips head screwdriver.
All of which is gone through in the stickies, and found fairly easily in searches of this section.

So long as you're ok with the overall output of the speakers, to get a little more out of the mid-range and overall, replacing the head-unit should be the first choice IMO.

All in all, before anything else I'd call, speak, and order from crutchfield since this sounds like a first time thing..
