Default Head Unit Replacement

Hello all, been reading through the forums about replacing the head unit in my 2012 base system. The speakers have been done already, but they still don't sound great with the stock unit (either need to turn the bass way down to get clarity or lose all the clarity with the bass up and everything sounds muddy).
I see the options for the Socshe replacement but read horror stories with the battery draining. I know the firmware is supposed to fix this but pretty hesitant on that model.
I see two from Metra, the 99-5823 and 99-5826.
Either one seems way over priced with mixed reviews. I found the 5823 on crutch field but not sure how i feel about the look. The newer one with the touchscreen doesn't look as bad, but still not crazy about it.
Does anyone know were to get the 5826 online at a reasonable price?
Or has anyone attempted to find a way to keep the stock controls and even stock LCD panel and make a custom bezel to install an after market head unit?
Or know of a 3rd option?
Let me know what you think.
Thanks

Sonic Electronix has the 99-5823ch for $259.99 and the Scosche kit for 269.99.

Thanks Mondo, i took a look. Still not sure how i feel about the look still. May see if i can bypass the factory amps and run a better amp and maybe a sound proc.
Do you know anything about bypassing the factory amps in a 2011/2012?
