Whats a good sound system?
Hey guys, im new to all of this. I got my first mustang and am fixing it up. Im looking to add a nice sound system to it but am a bit stumped. Ive been checking out some of the forums and im just wondering whats the best bang for the buck. I don't want a sub that will mask the actual music, but to help to compliment it... any ideas on a good sub and speakers?? Thanks!

You have to be more specific. Looking for high sound quality? Thinking of componets at all? How many subs do you think? What's the budget? Are you installing all of it? Whats the year of vehicle? Any brands your familiar/prefer with? What are the functions you want out of the system?
Lots of other questions but these will give us some idea of the general direction of where you want to go with it.

i wouldnt go with anything other than a pioneer or alpine head unit...pioneer has the best rep right now
look at JL audio...IMO, they are the best subs for the money...i recently put away my 10W3's and replaced them with alpine type R's and they sound bad *** too.
as far as mids and highs, i personally like the kicker comp components...the good thing about that is that they come with a snap plate so you can mount the tweeters over the cone of the speaker so you dont have to do a seperate mount and they still sound great...unless you are overloaded with money, then you can just get a couple sets of focal components (800-1600/pair depending on the model number).
alpine makes a good amp for the money, JL makes a bad *** amp but they are pricey (you get what you pay for)
compliment your system with a 1 farad capacitor to ease the pain on your alternator and battery and now you have a system.

Get yourself a stinger bat cap
2 jl w7 12's or one for your mustang probobly, personally i'd rather have a t2 but for sound quality we will go with jl
might as well get a 1000/1 jl amp since you went with jl for subs. It would look better.
Get a nice ported box
a nice installation
dynamat the trunk
an avic n-1 head
and pop in the bass testers.

JL is one of those on the bottom of the list for best bang for buck category. And if you have more than 1000 watts, 1000 real watts that is, you'll want more than one cap. Rule of thumb is for every 1000 watts, need 1 farad worth in a cap. Even if you only have 1100 total, get a 2 farad cap minimum. If a cap has the capacity to discharge 1000 watts of power at one musical burst and you need it to do 1100, it's going to strain your system which was the point of getting a cap in the first place right? And I don't think a company having a good rep makes them better than anyone else. However if your looking for a user friendly unit, it's definatly Pioneer. If your looking for best all around single din head unit, Eclipse has probably the best out there. JL has 8 out of 10 performance for 11 out of 10 performance. If you really want awesome quality for what the product should actually cost check out companies like Adire, Resonant Engineering, Ascendant Audio. Im most familiar with Adire products you take their Tumult driver, that will annilate a Dub7 in SQ and still keep up with it in SPL numbers. And for their 12" at $650 msrp who could complain. The only problem with companies like those I listed is that finding shops that carry them is more difficult than shops that have stuff like Kicker, JL, Memphis junk like that, sorry did I say junk? Anyhow, give us a better idea on your budget and what you want out of the system we'll give some suggestions.
If he is building a SQ system why would he play bass testers? Do you know if he needs navi either? I thought he said he wants a nice overall system, never heard him say he road trips alot and gets lost frequently. Although that'd be a good way to spend $1500. In a SQ system even a dub7 is overkill. That be like buying a turbo kit that can do 600 hp and only shooting for 400 hp, not necessary at all. If you do like JL just amping up the SQ in the car a w3 would be enough, then that money you just saved on your woofers you could put towards more important things like your amp(s).

Sieght, I have 6 12' memphis hpo running on 3 class d 1100 watt memphis's. I have a new stinger battery under the hood and 2 bat caps, and I am running fine, I do not see a need for more than 2 if you are running around 3k watts.
hey guys,
the car is a 97 mustang, nothing super fancy, but a nice looking car nonetheless. anyway im looking to fix it up a bit for driving around in state. im looking to spend under 300 if possible. I dont want to go all out on it, but a sub that can compliment some nice speakers would be fantastic. im curious, if i dont install a cd player, how is sound quality from an ipod thats converted into the cassette player or fm radio station? again not trying to spend alot of money. thanks

Into the tape deck the Ipod will sound a little less tape quality, the FM Modulator better than local FM stations, but not much. You want to replace the whole system with a sub woofer for under $300??? To be completly honest if your talking all speakers, woofer, amp, wiring. If you buy the absolute cheapest stuff off the internet you can find. You might be able to keep it under $300. Thats if you install it all yourself as well.
im just looking around for some stuff that seems alright, again keep in mind i have no idea whats good and what isnt. I was lookin around and found this Best Buy anyway im curious on your opinions. thanks
