Default Free-air

When a sub's description says it can work in free-air, does that mean it doesnt need a box? And what if you put it in a box?

This Kicker Comp 12" also works in free-air applications. 12" Dual 2 Ohms subwoofer Polymineral cone with double-stitched foam surround High-strength steel basket Frequency response: 25-500Hz Power handling: 400 watts RMS Peak power: 800 watts Spring-loaded nickel-plated terminals Works in free-air applications

it needs a baffle and alot of other work to get them sounding right. they pretty much just use teh truck as an enclosure. if your looking for output then these arnt the kind of subs you want. they usually are pretty low end subs.

Is there any other free-air subs that are decent? I have a good idea for my trunck but boxes are gonna make it too difficult.

DLS has a couple but most free airs are pretty low end. just do 2 small sealed boxes because your still going to have to have a board and everything else made so the free airs will perform.

OK, I learned alttle about how free-airs work and realize that they still need to be mounted to a board and "sealed". They say they use the entire trunk space as a "box" so they can obviously use a large area, but is there any problems with having too small of an area? It would still be a good many cubic feet...
