He is a 7 year old Dachshaund who for the first 5 years if his life thought he was superdog. There wasn't anything that he would jump off or try to jump on. I think that is how he tire his back knees all to hell.

Ask the vet if those ACL repairs are a traditional TPLO or just an ACL repair.
We had a Rottweiler that blew out both knees. First the left, then while recovering from the first surgery she put a lot of pressure on the other one and messed it up. But we expected that.
The first knee was something like 300 bucks, then the second time was cheaper. I guess he gave us a break getting two done. But the TPLO surgery was WAAAAAY more involved and tons more expensive.
The TPLO surgery involves reconstructive knee surgery with modification to the bones. The other surgery they go in and wire the knee up so it won't move in ways it isn't supposed to and then they will tell you that the wires they use WILL eventually break, but the trick is to let the scar tissue build to the point where it holds the knee in place before the wires break. Some vets say not to even worry about it and that the scar tissue will build up over time. I'm guessing that a Dachsund doesn't weigh 95 lbs like our Rottie did so it may work even better with the cheaper surgery.
She lived 7 years after the surgery and did pretty well. Once the ACL is torn they generally develop arthritis and that along with cancer is what got her down at 14 yrs.
Good luck

Damn! Vet just called, the lab results are in. poor boy has an autoimmune disease so there's not really a lot that can be done. We had already kind of made that decision but it's still not easy to think about what he's been suffering through.
