A few years ago I bought a 2000 Buick Century with around 120k on it for $3500. The drive train is pretty bulletproof on those. And it got right at 30 mpg. It was a pretty simple car, parts were dirt cheap too (as they are on all those mass produced GM products). It rode really nice, had lots of room, etc.

My oldest boy just got a 2000 Civic, Honda is usually a pretty good car. Like Jeff says, though...change that timing belt at the specified intervals! Interference motors are expensive to fix if you throw one.

Might have missed it, but my friend has a 93 prelude v tech that he could probably be convinced to get rid of. All stock. Typical peeling clear coat and such but everything works I think. Just did a clutch change last fall, approx 150-170 thousand miles.

Fug no, I've never seen a reliable Cherokee. Every single one I've seen (through friends and co workers) have issues up the wazoo. Cooling issues, tranny issues, A/C problems, etc. Dodge/Chrysler/Jeep. Initial quality is ok, long term reliability is

Not speaking for the autos, but the 4.0 platform vehicles are solid mechanically speaking. It's just one of those vehicles you have to be prepared to tinker with. The "accessories" do tend to go out, you'll have to suffer through those one at a time. No I would not choose it as a only vehicle for a DD but if you have a backup you can get a lot of cheap miles out of them if you do the labor.
