Default Fuel Delivery Issues (I think...?)

First post on these forums

Anyways, the ride is a 66 mustang, convertible, C code (289 2bbl carb) C-4 Auto tranny. I'm having a few issues with what I believe to be fuel delivery.

First problem - Weird sputtering and dieing, but its random and intermittent. It does it randomly, then goes away for a bit then comes back. When it starts happening, the engine begins to die down, and I give it more and more gas, and it keeps sputtering. Oddly enough, if I put my foot to the floor it revs back up again, and then starts sputtering. It's like it will die unless I put my foot on the floor. Another weird fact, it only happens when the motor is warmed up. When it's cold and still warming up, it doesn't seem to ever happen. This led me to believe maybe the timing was too far advanced and was detonating under high heat situations so I retarded the timing a bit. It helped ever so slightly, but still didn't fix it. I'm gonna replace the fuel filter next. Any other suggestions?

Second Problem (Atleast I think its a problem) - Any of you with 64-66 mustangs with auto tranny ever get this weird surging kickback on the gas pedal. I don't even know how to describe it to be perfectly honest. But when I accelerate lightly, there's nothing. As I start pushing into the pedal the car begins to accelerate harder, and the pedal feels like a weight is swinging on it lol, it keeps pushing back and forth and the car jerks back and forth (and I look like a ****ing retard driving lol)

Sounds like it's running really rich. I would check your choke and make sure it is opening.

Sorry for the long wait on the reply, was on spring break. Anyways... since posting the thread, I purchased a carburetor rebuild kit and rebuilt it. Carb now has all new gaskets, the idle-mixture is adjusted, AND I found out this little tiny connector which attaches the check valve to the float assembly which closes or open the flow of fuel into the float chamber was in fact missing. Assuming that the float levels would've been jacked up because of that, I assumed without a doubt that it would fix the problem. So I tuned the idle-mixture needles, adjusted the timing, and set the idle speed. I let the car warm up and took it out for a spin. Upon coming home from the quick drive, I pulled it into the driveway and it started sputtering again. So apparently the rebuild kit was to no avail. The in-line fuel filter on the carb was also replaced when it was rebuilt, so that's not it either.

Any other ideas? I don't think it would be the fuel pump, it'd either be working or not working since it's the mechanical one. I almost forgot to mention... I removed the #1 spark plug just to take a peak and it was brown and coated with unburned fuel around the outside of the spark plug seat. Although the excess of fuel on the plugs would say running rich, I just tuned the idle-mixture screws when I rebuilt it and I don't think the jetting could THAT far off since those are the jets that have always been installed and it never used to do this. I'm guessing that just leaves ignition. I've had it planned to get one of those pertronix electronic distributor modules and a new coil. Think that would solve it? As much as I'd like to just replace a bunch of parts, I'd like to keep this fix someone cost-minded.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Alright, today I messed with it some more. I screwed around with the idle-mixture needles which varied the quality of the idle, but either way, rich or lean, it would still have the sputtering issue when it was warmed up and idling. However, I did notice one really odd coincidence and that was that it seems to do worse if the car is on some sort of incline or decline. Could this be the fuel pump or the fuel pickup in the gas tank? Either way, it would be weird if one of those was the problem since it only acts up when the car is warmed up. Maybe the parts inside the mech. fuel pump expand with the heat and stick or something? I'm at wit's end, I can't imagine what else could cause it.

Only other thing I can imagine would be the coil, can they fail under hot conditions?
