Default Power Steering Adjusting Nut Function?

Hi there,

I'm hoping someone can help...

I have a 65 mustang with power steering. I just rebuilt the control valve and tightened the adjusting nut. I adjusted it slowly and heard a "click". Turns out the lock nut threads got messed up and the nut is adjusted all the way in (I think?).

My question is, adjusting this nut does what exactly? Does it only tighten up the ball joint to the pitman arm, or does it also increase pressure in the power steering?

After I put the car back together, the steering is nice and tight and was doing well until i heard creaking from the front end 30 miles later. Turns out I've got a leak from the p/s system somewhere - I suspect it's the pressure hose, as it looks worn but it wasn't leaking before the rebuild.

So I can replace the pressure hose no problem, but am wondering since that adjusting nut is possibly at maximum adjustment whether I'm going to have another leak due to too much pressure in the system? If the adjusting nut has nothing to do with pressure, then what does it do exactly?

Any help would be hugely appreciated.

Thanks, Jason

As you have discovered, the nut centers the spool, has not a thing to do with pressure.,

If leaking, you can turn the nut 7 ways to Sunday, not acomplish a thing but wear out the tools.
