If you want your trunk carpeted, take a look at most of the Mustang parts shops. They usually sell tunk carpet.

I have the OE type trunk mat like GT350 Klone. I think its cool.
I like the stock look with the added trunk mats. It fits the cars and all but is a bit ugly compared to todays cars.

As for why.. individual preference? Particle board or plywood or go really crazy with fiberglass can make for a very nice trunk and make it much more tidy. Stock the trunk floor is a disaster for transporting anything. Use the above materials for a nice level floor with a hidden storage area below (in the cavity above the fuel tank). Run the new level floor across to the quarters and now you don't need to worry about items rolling down into the lower quarter areas. Tape, wax those 2 lower areas and fill with an expandable foam then hollow out (or use fiberglass), put a small trap door in the trunk floor for additional storage or small tools or an emergency kit in an areas that is usually lost space. Carpet the inner quarters for added neatness or bring the carpeted plywood up to protect anything in the trunk from banging into the quarters causing dents/cracked paint. A box behind the rear seat to house a sub or 2 with a storage compartment between them.

Your imagination can run wild and you'd be surprised at what can be done and how useful a trunk can become, not to mention how much nicer it could look. Spend the time to do something to make it pop and its that added wow factor helping at shows for those trophies (we all like trophies) or simply for personal satisfaction. I do it for the personal satisfaction of a job well done and not really the trophies, though they are nice. The wife also appreciates all those little things that make it look clean and its always a good thing when the wife is happy.

As for weight.. pft most of us drive our cars for enjoyment on the road and not at a track. The additional weight from a sheet of plywood or particle board and some carpeting isn't that much. Hell.. I've got 300lbs of sound insulation, deadener and undercoating in and under our car.. a sheet of wood is nothing!

I agree that plywood isn't that heavy but the MDF crap is. I don't know I just like the stock or close to stock look. I guess I just don't really get the whole custom trunk thing.

You and me are thinking along the same lines. I just dont have a large level of care in me about my trunk other than basic cleaning and no rust. I figure if somebody has an opinion about the trunk of my car then i hope they get over it someday.

I just added a piece of pressboard to fit inside the well ontop of the gas tank and got some cheap carpet from the auto parts store and walmart and covered everything. I took the sub off of the back seat divider and put it in its own sub box that is just sitting in the trunk held in by my tool box and the bungee cord that is keeping it from sliding around.
