The usefulness (or lack there of 1st gear) is entirely dependent on the engine combo in the long run IMO. I run an AOD with the 4r70w gearset so I have a 2.85 first gear....stock AOD would have a 2.4 first gear. I have it paired with a 4.10 in the back....I also have a 7500 RPM redline so I can wind it out pretty high in 1st when racing.

If you have a stock AOD or AODe with the 2.4 first the 4.1 is the popular choice as mentioned last year when this thread started

My approx RPM to Speedo chart:

Also if you are going to run a higher than stock stall it is important to make sure you select a rear gear ratio that will give you a normal highway cruise above (or close to it) the actual stall to reduce the heat that will be generated from slipping the converter. When I drive on the open road...I really cruise and usually chugg along at 70+...but if you are going to be doing 55...make sure you pay close attention to what RPM you will be pulling....with a 4.10 you will be in the 2300-2500 neighborhood.

It is a basic stock 89' 302HO and a 86' AOD Police transmission. I plan to drive this on the highway a lot yet want to be able to do play a little in the street so just looking for the best bang for my buck
