flexplate rubing against something
recently i installed a new starter motor on my automatic 70 302 coupe becuase on the old starter a mounting braket broke and the starter was falling out of place. now the new starter was working fine until one day i herd alot of noise coming from the bell housing crakling and metal flying every time i started but stoped after car was running. i took off the starter and found the remains of the old braket and something else i couldnt identify in the bell housing, i removed the debree and the sound went away but now when im starting i hear a different noise like the flexplate is rubing against something not a grinding but like metal sheets rubing together causing friction what could that be ?
I had the same problem only i fixed it before somethin bad happened, its the counter weights on your flexplate that are nicking the edge of the seperator plate. Make sure all the bolts on the bellhousing are tight, that was the problem with mine, it gave it just enough movement. I that doesnt work you could put some washers in between the bellhousing and the seperator plate where the bolts go through.
maybe with the initial (bang) you chiped your ring gear? so now teeth are messed a bit
oooor
with the initial (bang) your starter isnt "true" and is making the noise because of that as y our turning her over

yes maybe it is that because if it was the flexplate then the rubing noise would continue while the engine has started but it only sounds like that when its cranking, weird because i just bought that stupid starter like 3 weeks ago new
man what the hell im getting frustrated i been messing with this for like 3 days now. just a few minutes ago i unmounted the starter
and examined it and it seemed fine and from what i could tell no dammage to the flex p. so i put it back on cranked it it cranks reeeeeeh then gets stuck then reeeeh stuck reeh stuck then cant even crank, i just hear the starter gear going out to meet the f.p. but doesnt spin like click click the starter spins good cause i tunred it on without being connected to engine and it was reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee perfect. and why only does it strain and get stuck on crank and not when ening starts to run i mean i know the engin is going so fast and forcing it maybe but i dont hear a thing when its on just a smoooooth idle

on second thought since it was a hot day today the engine started on one of the slow stop cranks and when it did i think im not sure i herd a littel scraping while running maybe it is as the guy at the top said and the counter wieghts draging cause i hear draging while cranking! lol i mean i wanna find the easyest way out without having to take out my engine maybe?
First off, what the heck are you talking about with the bracket? There is no starter bracket for a 302. It bolts directly to the bell housing with 2 bolts. What did the piece look like that you pulled out of there? Were they steel or aluminum? The new starter could be rubbing the flex plate but it's really hard to say with the info given.
Are you positive you have the right starter? Did you put the new one beside the old one and examine them closely to make sure they are one and the same? Did the new one go in without forcing it? If the nose on the new one is a tad longer than the old one, you will get a rubbing sound on the flexplate. Don't trust the yo yo's at the parts place to give you the right one. Examine it carefully.
