Are you positive you have the right starter? Did you put the new one beside the old one and examine them closely to make sure they are one and the same? Did the new one go in without forcing it? If the nose on the new one is a tad longer than the old one, you will get a rubbing sound on the flexplate. Don't trust the yo yo's at the parts place to give you the right one. Examine it carefully.
exactly, I used to work in a stang shop and would stock about a dozen different types of starters for 65-73's

There is also a slight difference between the starters for an automatic, and ones for a manual shift car. But for some unknown reason, the starter for my manual shift 65 takes one designed for an automatic. That is why it is important to lay them side by side and inspect them vey closely for an exact match.

auto c4 im pretty sure, if the nose was touching the back of the houseing woudnt it not fit? i dont think it is the starter i think something broke like one of the guys up top said because when i first installed it, it was working perfectly just maybe a slight lighter cranking sound, i figure that was because it was new, now after a while maybe like 2 weeks i herd something sorta break like metal chiping and it would still start but their was noise everytime i cranked it so i looked in and found some broken pieces of soemthing like i said up top, the starter seemed intact and so did the flexplate, and when i tried to piece back the metal i found it formed a gold spacer object of some sort like a cone funel cyclinder about half an inch long and maybe 1/4 inch wide. and after i cleared the debree the crakling noise went away im pretty sure it was the metal scraps flying around in their, but then a draging sound started and cranking got really slow and thats were im at now
