The engine is smoking now.
Okay we put the timing light on today. It is not timed right. we have yet to fix due to the lack of a distributer wrench. The engine is smoking out of the exhaust. It is a black to dark blue color maybe. Does this mean i am burning oil?
Let it sit overnight, then the next day wipe you finger inside the pipe. If it feels oily, it is oil. But don't get excited. Could just have gas washed down the cylinder walls. Smell the oil on the dipstick, if it smells like gas, change your oil, get it running right, and you may need to change it one last time.
I'd try to get it running right first, then worry about the smoke, if there is any at that point.
Good luck with it.

Get that thing timed right first - if the timing is way off, it should run rough and even make smoke. But fix the timing, then see what you have coming out the tail pipe. If the smoke is black, it is running really rich and way off timing can do that.
Ok maybe I went a little over board but dang man he's got the timing light and he letting a little thing like no distributor wrench stop him from timing the thing. One of the things about turning wrenches is over coming problems. There is very few times where you have to have the exact right tool for the job. If you don't have the tool use a different tool. If that don't work try another tool. I'm not sure there is another engine out there with more room to get to the distributor hold down bolt than a small block ford. I apologize for being rough on you but in the words of Larry the Cable Guy "Get 'er done!"
