i did the clutch on my f-250 last summer. i also had an 87' ranger w/ 5 speed, everything looked to be the same, just alot smaller.

how i did it:
-unbolt the shifter, disconnect all of the wires for the speedo, back up lights etc. (labeled them first)
-removed the driveshafts (4x4) and replaced all the universals while they were out.
-un bolted the transfer case, and pulled it off of the trans onto my chest (hurt a little, but a ranger transfer case should be alot lighter)
-remove the starter
-remove the clutch slave cylinder from the bellhousing/clutch fork end. (i didn't have to drain it or anything for my truck, but you may have to)
-jack the transmission up and remove the tranny crossmember
-unbolt the transmission from the engine and pull it backwards and down using a transmission jack (preferred) or a floor jack.
-take the throwout bearing off of the trans input shaft, remove the clutch assembly (pressure plate, clutch disc)
-take the flywheel off (get resurfaced if needed) and replace the pilot bearing.

put back together:
-grease pilot bearing and install into flywheel, bolt flywheel onto the crankshaft. (use loc-tite on bolts)
-put clutch disc onto clutch installation tool and put into pilot bearing.
-bolt pressure plate onto flywheel, remove installation tool.
-grease the new throwout bearing and install onto transmission input shaft, install clutch fork.
-bolt the transmission back up to the engine, reinstall crossmember.
-bolt transfer case to the transmission. (use silcone gasket stuff inbetween mating surfaces)
-reinstall driveshaft(s) with new u-joints.
-put all wiring back where it should be, and re attach clutch slave cylinder.
-put starter back in.

also:
you should disconnect the battery before you start anything, you can jump the started while removing it.
and it is a good idea to replace the transmission and transfer case fluid while you are working on the truck.

good luck,
if i missed anything let me know.

I think he meant the transmission fluid.
