I am doing the I6 to v8 swap right now on a 65 and there are others on the board doig the swap.
IMO, find a clean car. If you find a v8 chances are you are going to replace most of it anyway. So my advice would be to find a clean car that is affrodable. 9k is too much. We paid less than half that for our I6 car. My biggest problem right now is finding a rear end.
And, therein lies the problem with the swap. You will spend an incredible amount of time and money. The biggest headache is just what you stated about finding a rear end.

What sucks is it wasnt hard just 10 years ago. Granadas were all over the yards some with 9" rears. Then all the yard owners got big $$ for scrap and crushed almost everything that wasnt 5 years old or less. We lost a HUGE resource of stuff for every domestic car. They were even crushing stuff from the forties and fifties, a few scrapped 30's era cars and trucks. It was just stupid and painful to see.
