289 or 302
Hey all,
First post here and looking forward to some replies...
I read the post about the guy trying to decide between a 289 or 302 build...
so from what I understand - 289 and 302 blocks are the same - a 302 crank and rods will work in a 289 block - and for a little more punch 351W heads (of course matching cams carbs and exhaust) 300 to 350 HP is easy -
I have a 68 coupe with the stock 289 and a 289 rebuild in it now - I would like to keep the stock motor - freshen it up and set it aside - now what to do with the 289 block in it now - I want at least 350HP...
I was thinking of matching some edelbrock parts (heads - intake manifold - cam - carb thunder avs) and keeping my fingers crossed... although the idea of shortening the stroke down to the 302 sounds like I might get a little more life out of the motor in the long run - Im still just up in the air about the whole thing -
Thoughts - suggestions - sound like Im on the right track?
Thanks

actually you increase the stroke to get a 302. If you have an extra block and extra money, just throw a stroker kit at it. Get some TFS heads, or something similar and build an engine that will scoot real good...
