I've been looking for an answer on the web but I have not been able to find one. I have been working in my basement and have a two year old running around. Lead is bad news for young children as well as adults.

Lead based paints were used in house paints, but automotive paints used petroleum based paints. However other toxic chemicals were introduced in the paints in the 60's. Wear a mask when working with those paints.

I talked to the Carquest paint supply guy, and he said that Cars painted in the 60's had lead in the paint. This is important for those of us with kids around the garage or home. If your sanding your car even in the drive where your kids play I would say stop.

I reserve the right for the information to be wrong, If anyone can completly answer this question please post and give us the straight information...

I called the National Lead Information Center, and they lead me to a regional office in Dallas. I called them, and left a message, but they may not call me back until Monday. In the meantime, you guys can call the NLIC at 1-800-424-5323. Let's get this resolved once and for all. I do know that when sanding any household stuff, that you need to wet sand it if the cabinets, etc. were built prior to 1973. Breathing the dust is the problem, and especially for kids 6 years old or younger. During the times before that, lead was certainly used in residential housing.
